I see occasional posts here about top covering, or not. Here in central PA, with the weather we get, I think top cover is the only way to go. I'd say this picture explains why I do.

I would love to top cover but with the wind out here in the midwest. There is nothing that could stay in place. We had gusts over 40mph last week.

That's rough. We get strong winds here too but only occasionally. Do you leave your stacks to the mercy of the elements or do you have a roof over them?

I mostly leave them to the elements for a few years. Then put them under a carport next to the owb before burning.

Well, I lose a metal top cover once in a while to high winds, but rarely. I weigh them down pretty good to prevent it.

Same here. Most of my stacks have tarps on top, others have corrugated plastic roof panels. I have no shortage of rocks on my property so that's what's holding a lot of covers down. Rocks, bricks, broken cinder blocks, old cast iron brake rotors, steel pipes, anything with some heft to it that I don't mind getting rained/snowed on. Long-term (hopefully this year) I'll build a large woodshed to keep everything under cover though.

I cover during the winter. Depending on the stack, I either use 4'x18' tarps from Menards or the top of the bladders from IBC totes. It's nice pulling out bone dry splits that aren't frozen together during the winter.

Most of my top covering is used greenhouse plastic cut to size. But, my grandson got a job at rubber roofing place and he can get a pallet of blemished stuff for cheap twice a year, so I am set with that. Also use some metal roofing from leftover jobs. Like you, I have lots-o-rocks for weighing down, along with paver blocks etc. Also have a shed for "money in the bank" wood.

I put a bunch of eyelets in my rubber roofing material and use rubber bungee straps to keep it from blowing off. Bet that would work for you as well.

No top cover for me. I do blow as much snow off as I can. Most of my ready to burn wood is under the deck so it gets some protection.
