With our first cold shot coming in at the end of the month and the heavy rains forecast for the Northeast to continue, we'll cover our shoulder season wood this weekend, maybe even some of our better wood.

It also looks like September will be a very wet month with a possible Hurricane for the east coast, we're forecast for some colder air in September too.

I just talked with a guy over coffee this morning, he already raked up 21 bags of leaves (I'm wondering if he's just a bullchitter) from a Maple tree in his front yard, he said it's a healthy Maple, is this a sign of another tuff winter?

Probably a sign of stress in the maple tree. We've had lots of wet wet springs followed by dry dry summers lately, and it has really stresses out the trees over here. Not sure how it is in your neck of the woods.

I covered my cord of poplar up yesterday; that's what I'm planning to burn in the shoulder season.

He sounds like a bullchitter to me; either about the number of bags or the health of the tree. One of the maples in my side yard has been losing some leaves, but there's some damage at the base. I suspect I'll be burning it in a few years.

G.A, the trees I see that are losing leaves are damaged.
S.C., if we have Poplar that comes down, when I split it the bark comes off. I'm not sure if it's just me but it seemed to give off a bad smell when burning.

Yeah most of the bark came off the poplar I cut up - what a mess. Had to take the wood trailer full of bark back out to the woods to dump in a low spot. I had 3 of them down across one of my trails, so they at least needed to be moved. This will be my first time burning it; we'll see how it goes.

A few years back, we had something that got into the maples in the residential area. They turned brown and fell off in August. Did not get the fall colors, just brown. The trees come through the winter and had a natural year with the leaves turning in the fall. I don't know what the condition was, but it really wags bizzar.

Right where I want to be.
I've noticed a lot of Maples around here already turning.
Odd, because the Birch in our side yard is usually the first to turn and it hasn't started yet.
Maybe there's a "thing" going around in the Maples.
zap, we're due for 45 tonight with a "real feel" of 42. That's a bit cool for this time of year.
The 30 is at the ready..............:)

Just a low of 50 for our area. I'm changing the door gasket this year.....after that's done I'll clean the inside so everything will be ready for next weekend.

I saw a few Maples (not on our property) that never grew leaves after last winter, they look healthy but must have something I can't see, they did have leaves last year.

From the Net! I've never seen this site before so we'll see how this forecast turns out.
Northeast and Great Lakes: A good portion of the Northeast will likely experience a colder-than-average winter, but it really depends on where you’re located at. Places in the northern Northeast like Maine could actually have around average temperatures and snowfall, while regions more to the south and along the coast may feel the effects of heavier snowfall and brutally cold air. The Great Lakes region will be brutally cold; however lake-effect snowfall could be considerably less this year. This was hard for me to include on my winter map, which is why I wanted to mention it here. Waters on the lakes are still very cold from this past winter with chunks of ice that were still being spotted as late as this past July 4th. This will likely have an effect on the lake-effect snow machine this upcoming winter.

You do all understand that weather forecasting more than 96-120 hours in the future is basically meaningless, right? And that there is no possible way anyone can know what September in the northeast will be like?

You and I putting some bright colors on top of a map of the U.S. at random have the same odds of accurately predicting this winters weather.

I'd say that's pretty close...From watching the weather the last 4 or 5 years pretty close... Each year everything east keeps creeping west. The hot dry weather that the west is getting now was east of the Mississippi River about 4 years ago. It just keeps moving west.

Wife and I took a trip on the Goldwing on the weekend up towards Algonquin Prov. Park. The odd tree starting to show some colors as is alot of the scrub brush. Noticed birds in the area really starting to flock up in large numbers which is a little early for here.

We're well below average here pretty much all summer. We should be in the 90's and our highs for the next couple days won't break 80. I hope snowfall isn't too bad - wouldn't mind it but I pull doubles for a living down into Virginia and like 2" makes travel down there treacherous. I'm hoping for cold winter temps down here but little precipitation. Double wagons don't like icy roads.:pete: And :firepit:..

Wasn't nearly as wet this summer as last, although we had weekly bad storms with a lot of rain up until about 2 weeks ago. Overall national temps cooler than usual, some all time records set, some 10 year records set (like NYC) Here, next couple days lows in the lower 50's, for the 2nd time in the past month. Next week will warm up again. Polar Vortex starting late September. :) Bring it!

My stacks are almost all covered but I ain't in no hurry to fire up the stove. I usually don't burn much if any until mid October. I like to run the boiler some to make sure it's chugging along well before we get into real winter.

A portion of my weather where I live comes from here, what members have in other parts of the country.
In my line of work (construction) it is second nature knowing what the weather is on a daily basis.
I also enjoy seeing what members have collected in research, be it personal or from a professional source.
And I could not put any of them DOWN for the time they put in for the safety of others.

oh, and welcome to the forum BCC :)

Most around here are thinking an early, pro-longed winter.
Bears are really active, birds are devouring un-ripe berries, deer are on the roadsides eating in the day, elk are still high but I almost hit a moose the other day.
It's very wet and green around here. Drove home last night over Loveland Pass-(11,990 ft.). Looking N/E at the summit, looked like a vertical green pasture.
And I have another fire in the stove tonight.
