Every year I do all my firewood hoarding from November thru February. I’m fortunate to be able to get all my wood from our property. There’s been a large tree down in our lower woods for a few years. I thought it would be rotten by now but to my surprise it is all solid! Big, heavy and lots of useable wood. I think it’s a white oak. Below is a picture of one of the splits. I thought it had a nice pattern and thought I’d share it here. I’ve never seen these patterns in oak.
What’s even more interesting (at least to me) is many splits have some form of this striking color variation. I wonder what caused this? I saved two of the blocks cause they just looked so pretty to me. Not sure what I’ll do with them, but I saved them nonetheless.
Thats some great color and pattern! Do you know any woodworkers? There's a nice project hiding in there!
I’ve noticed this in dead oak as well. I figure it’s the early stages of rot when the acids and tannins start to ferment. Similar to spalted maple, but in oak. Smells like silage.
It does smell like silage. But very solid. Where those colors are it does split hard. First time I’ve ever seen this in oak.
