I'm working a show for a buddy of mine who sells pipes. He didn't have any stands so I said I could probably make some. Originally I tested out the idea on a small limb of firewood that had been perfectly split down the middle, but I didn't like the way the oak looked. So instead I grabbed a limb of juniper today, mounted it on the lathe, trimmed into a cylinder, and then it took me about 45 min to rip it in half using a Japanese ripping saw. Should have used the drill press to make the holes. Had to go back and make sure the pipes sit plumb and level. Sanded with 120, 150, and 220 on the lathe. Used a small piece of 220 to smooth out all the sharp corners. Only measuring I did was to find center. Had some small tear out even though I used tape. The smaller forstner bit seemed like it was nicked from the factory but shame on me for not examining it more carefully when first purchased. First coat of Tried & True Original Wood Finish is on there. This is their polymerized linseed oil + beeswax. I love the way wood feels with the beeswax.
Thanks! "Limited edition, hand made, juniper pipe stands" Hahahahahahahaha. The other cool thing is he already has a cast iron brand about 3" wide with his logo on there so I can't wait to try it out. Of course I'll do some test branding first but before that he has to find the damm thing!
What kind of pipes??? For smoking what in??? Tobacco? Those look a little fancier than what my grandpa used for smoking pipe tobacco…
One could smoke tobacco out of them yes. But the point is, my buddy actually designed those. He's the original which is super cool. There are a ton of counterfeits out there. He's legit - designed, manufactured, and sold by him. If you're interested in knowing more about it I'm happy to PM about it.
Nice looking woodwork LordOfTheFlies and I’m sure the flowing colors of the grain will really (resin)ate with prospective buyers
Pinched for what? Nothing a little disclaimer “For Tobacco Use Only” won’t fix. Unless you’re talking about him not filing the proper paperwork for an LLC or something...
Ahh gotcha. I’m sure his product will be a hit and the display you made him will be a huge eye catcher as well
