IMG_0858.JPG I have Red Oak, Black Walnut, Black Cherry, Hard Maple, Ash,Elm and poplar in my firewood arsenal. I'm not burning saw logs but every time I split the Walnut/Cherry I just can't believe how beautiful it is and that I am burning it.

Yep, those are 2 that if I can, I’d rather mill than buck up for heat.

I get it... I feel the same way looking at all the knotless square splits of straight grained red oak in my piles. I think man, that’s a lot of nice flooring being wasted. We can’t think like that though!

Yep, we've found some beautiful pieces in the wood we split sometimes.
This was some curly oak we got, nearly the whole tree was like this, of course, we didn't know it until bucked and started splitting. 0923201639.jpg

We did save a few splits for a woodturning friend. He dried it and made some pens... 6223.jpeg
This was a big pecan round we had... 0512211022.jpg

I had that happen at my first house. The original owners had built it on a shoe string and they didn't clear the lot very well. So, I had a friend who is a tree guy come and drop a few in the front and side yard with his bucket truck. Like above, I bucked it all before starting to split and found that one of them was perfect Tiger Maple. The tree was also very straight with little to no lower branches/knots. Quite the kick in the pants loading those pieces into the wood stove and I was actually glad when they were gone so I didn't have to feel guilty burning them anymore...

Nice of you to save some for your friend. He did a great job with the pens! My next door neighbor used to make pens.

Just read that thread...beautiful, outstanding work. I helped a friend do some work on his new house a few years back. He had a staircase, we did the treads in 5/4 red oak, early American stain and the risers and trim was done in curly maple with clear coat...
I know which pile I got that limb from, so I will keep an eye out for more...

My buddy has a wm lt40 and is always shaking his head at the logs I turn into firewood. I go to his place and shake my head at the piles of logs that he hoards and are rotting.
