Your jaw dropped when you saw how big it really was. What size were you thinking? I know pics can be very deceiving when it come to log diameters.
Ya know, when I looks at these ads, I look at how long the wood could potentially heat my home. There are other factors, ease of loading etc. But I'm never one to think, how much money can I get for "cleaning it up". In this day and age, I'm thankful for that home-owner allowing me on their property and to run saws there. That's a [potential] whole ball of wax if I have an accident on their property. Most times they allow me to drive through their yard with a fully loaded truck (and trailer), which usually leaves tracks of some sort, that I wouldn't want in my yard. And they are offering potentially a couple months worth of warmth. I appreciate it, every time. In my eyes, it's a mutual benefit, and I like it that way. I took the 24" thinking there's no way I can't get through it, at least from both sides, and that was the case. It's just so much easier to make one buck cut. The tree niney fo is a tank. It's not my goto unless I see a monster. And this time, the pics fooled me...
Only in the crotch section! All joking aside, IME BL only smells bad when the bark starts loosening and comes off. Friggin putrid!
Neutral smell fresh cut, but as i cut a lot of it ive grown to like it. Not like sassafras or black birch though. Get it SS within a few months and you shouldnt have a problem. Top cover too. Unless you want barkless then leave it exposed til the bark comes off on its own but dont sniff it. Slippery as banana peels too.
I've had wet BL stink at times. The bark wasn't falling off, it just had a funky smell. Those crotch sections can really stink your bar up if you're not careful.
I get Douglass Fir that size pretty frequently. But I can’t imagine a chunk of amazing hardwood that size. I’d defend that thing with my life!
That there is a pile of gold. Nice haul. I haven't come across any since 2018. Still have about a cord hanging out. Also have about 50 nice splits sitting in reserve in my root cellar for those sub zero nights.
I would get as much bark off as possible that is what smells the worst. It gets loose over time and has some slippery -paper like layers where it touches solid wood. Thats where the worse smelling stuff is. I take the time to remove it with the splitter, hatchet or spade shovel. Helps with drying and gets the stink out of the yard
Great score! Had one dropped off this past spring that was about 38" in diameter but it wasn't as solid in the middle as that one. Heavy stuff!
OK Jason Holy chit! Nice wood I must say. Has locust mania spread to Pennsylvania? That is really great you were able park beside the wood to cut and load.
