I was at tractor supply yesterday and look a device that can replace a part of the stove pipe to stop heat from going out of the flew. Any advice here? I think the name of it was miracle burn or something. Sorry I don't have more information. Cant think of anything I have more problems with that cutting and putting together stove pipe. Any tips on this?
Like everything with woodstoves and add on devices... it's all about the fuel. Has to be totally dry firewood to get things working as good as they were designed for. Lot of camps in Maine have those smoke pipe units that lets the smoke flow around air tubes that have a fan blowing the hot air out of those tubes into the room. I suspect the newer USDA, FFA, USPS, UPS, FDA, USGA, EPA, PITA... regulated stoves, putting out less wasted heat and smoke, might have issues with them because of airflow in the stack. Dunno.
I think they are generally considered a bad idea. Some heat is "wasted" up the flue, but the gases need to be hot enough to exit the flue before condensing into deposits/creosote inside the flue.
Its called like magic reclaimer or heat??? Grizzly adam had one. It created lots of creosote as there was too mich heat being pulled from the flue. I think many say there fine on a smoke dragon but not good for an epa stove.
They are pretty common on stoves in Maine. Now to be used on a more modern EPA type stove, probably not a good idea. The stove shop here installs double wall from stove to chimney even to keep heat in the flue. I do know that on a different site a few years ago I had a photo in my Dad's workshop for something else and it caught his stove with the heat saver. It turned into a poo storm about how his shop was going to burn down, kill Bald Eagles, etc, etc. Funny how he has used one since the shop was built in the early 90s. The chimney is never really dirty.... cleaned it after 5+ years and it wasn't even worth taking out the brushes. I'm really glad not to see that same "koolaid" mentality here. The stoves he has used are just homemade or cheap box stoves and mostly burns paper trash, 2x4s or once in a while seasoned wood. The shop isn't heated all winter, just when needed. That might be just a few times a month or for a week at a time all depending on what is going on. Something like this: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000AXEXB/
Well it your burning paper or 2x4s only once a week no wonder there wasnt much soot even after 5 years! But Yea its funny how you put that on another site he was gonna die!
