I noticed a nice oak had come down this summer behind our house. I finally got up there to see what I had to do to get it cut up and out. Not only had an oak come down but it took a nice cherry with it. It isn't safe to block it up where it lays because if it would roll down the hill it would be hitting my deck and/or gazebo. I started working on it today and got most of the limb wood cut and brought to my processing area. I did get some 64" logs cut so I can get them out of the woods to be blocked up where it would be safe to do the cutting. Limb wood tossed out of the woods this morning. Cut up a dead standing oak as well. Cherry going from left to right Oak laying across the face of the hill. Got more limb wood tossed out in the PM and got some of the logs stacked up, sort of. Got most of the cherry cut up into 64 inch logs. Still a long oak log to cut up. I may try to drag it out before dong a lot of cutting on it. Close to a 12 foot spar still sticking up. Got all of the limb wood brought to my processing area. I'm pooped.
Looks like some decent wood Eric. Nice day there. Thank God no more humidity. I beyond tired of sweating.
I know I've said it a hundred times, but I'd love to burn some of this mythical "cherry" wood. It's kind of my bucket list wood.
If you weren't so darned far away... But to be honest, it really is nothing special. I never go looking for it and we have quite a bit of it. I burn some but it is far from my favorite.
I don't see much cherry, if at all. However, I learned earlier this year, that there are some small cherry trees here, in the yard. I need to cut a branch, no bigger than 2in, that's encroaching on the driveway. That'll get used in the smoker. I'll cut it to short pieces, split if it will, and keep it near the woodstove to dry it out quicker.
Nice little wood get Erik. I put cherry ahead of all softwoods including poplar. I like it better than walnut, better than silver maple, and boxelder. It's excellent for cooking too.
The best thing about Cherry wood imo is the aroma. Even dry it gives off a very nice smell when burning. BTU wise it's just kinda middle of the road. The trees are like giant weeds around here, grow fast & everywhere. They seldom die or grow straight. If you ever get this way, bring a truck/trailer & I'll send ya home with all you can haul. Edit: The other issue with the stuff is the neon purple birdchit all over the cars after the birds eat the fruit.
I like Cherry quite a bit. Dries relatively fast and always abundant in my area. I put it a notch below silver maple.
Got started making manageable logs out of the oak trunk and skidding them close to where I will be taking them out of the woods. Hope Scotty Overkill isn't too hard on me for my redneck rigging and skidding operation. I was only able to work this morning cause when I went in for lunch, I discovered a piece of one of my wisdom teeth broke off so I had to go to the dentist to get it fixed. Next week looks like some good weather to get it blocked up and hauled to my processing area. One of the pics shows the back of the house from where the trees were down. I didn't want to take a chance on rolling a round and hitting the deck or gazebo. Yes, one of the pics shows a choker made from rope and a shackle. I had to use a tow strap when the rope wouldn't reach
Any man that can work with what he has at hand & get job done is my kind of man! Equipment is where it's at until you don't have it. Then if you can make do you're far ahead of most. Very nicely done!
