I got up on the roof today and finally cleaned the stove pipe getting it ready for winter of course. But I have to say it is probably my least favorite job in all of heating with a wood stove. I enjoy going to the mountains and cutting down trees, bucking it up, splitting it and I do not mind even doing the stacking but getting up on the roof and taking the top section of pipe off and running the full length of my sooter eater down through that pipe I could really do with out. But like a lot of you here on the forum if you can still do it your self then you will continue to do it and so will I. Oh and the pipe was really clean. All I got was very little ash. Not bad for a guy who burns half his wood with that nasty pine.
Oh boy… here come the soot eater suggestions… But hey, glad you got it done safely and got 2 feet back on the ground, in the correct orientation.
Isn’t that what they make creosote buster logs for? Jk I have to scale A frame and than get on top of the chimney. I put it off as long as I can. When it gets cooler and the feeling strikes and someone is home to call 911.
I feel your pain. I cleaned mine a week ago. Steep and high off the ground. If you fall off you won’t hit the ground for a few seconds. Nice view from up there though.
It is an Osburn. I have never tried it from the bottom up because it is a dirty enough job from the top. I am sure one of these days I will be doing it from the bottom though. I will cross that bridge when I get to it.
Yea I pull the pipe duct tape my shop vac hose to the lip of it and brush up. I actually bought a hose extension and leave the vac outside so the exhaust doesn’t dust up the house.
Did mine a month ago too. Like you, it's the job I hate the most of all the jobs I have to do around here. I do it from the inside and it's in the unfinished basement so it's not that bad of a mess.
My hats off to sweeps who sweep chimneys regularly. It’s a lot more strenuous than some may think. My Jotul insert’s baffles are cast iron and a real back breaker putting them and the air tubes back in.
I was on & off my roof to many times today trying to get a tv antenna to work for our tv. Finally figured out it was the signal amplifier. Gotsta get a new one & then back up again.
Yep I take all the fire brick out of the stove and when done with cleaning the pipe I vacuum it out so I can get the brick back in. It is also a good time to inspect it.
That is one nice thing about the boiler, not much slope on the carport roof and short chimney. I never enjoy cleaning the tall back up chimney on the shop. Glad you got up & down safely.
I kind of put it off this year. I usually do it in August and today was a good day to get it done. No wind.
