I cleaned up a bunch of culls and shorties this morning... Finished filling the 2nd oak bin...close to a cord... Over the past couple weeks, working a day off, here and there, we cleaned up a big hickory, twin willow oaks and a big pecan limb. The hickory trunk... Some of the oak... We hauled 8 loads between the 2 places...
I grabbed another two loads of Birch rounds out of the gully this morning and finished off the front and the back, the back stack needs some smaller rounds that will finish it off, we have some Ash, Maple and Birch rounds that will finish off the back rack. After the above is done, I'll move the chit wood near the blue tarp over to the outside fireplace and get our stacking areas ready for the fall felling. I stopped to take a picture of the first load after it was split and the fawn came running by and then stopped to eat at the base of a small Ash I felled last fall.
I took the Weed Eater to a trail the wife walks and after that was done, I did the same to the area I'm opening up for snow storage just off the corner of the driveway, I plan on having the two White Pine on the ground tomorrow. I did do a check of up top and that good size Maple that is down will need to be rolled down the hill after it's bucked up.
This is the big Maple that came down, I walked down from the top when I went for a ride today. I'm thinking the easiest way I can get this to an area I can split it will be rolling it down the hill.
I was actually going to edit my post to clarify but forgot. They are 20” long between 30-36” diameter. Makes a lot of nice splits but a bear to work with.
Except for the top of the second Pine and some branches that I'll take over to the outside fireplace, this area will be ready for some snow storage this winter instead of being just off the corner of the driveway. I took two loads of branches and dead Pine over to the outside fireplace and then split & stacked all the Pine I had bucked up. The first picture is what it looked like before I took down three smaller trees the other day and two Pine today.
Thanks T.Jeff Veal , I usually try and improve some of the areas we have for snow storage each summer/fall, I have two or three more areas that I plan on doing before fall. Even though I had plenty of trails around the house, the areas for snow storage started after we bought the tractor in August of 2016 and the driveway has been getting wider ever since. Of the two trees I felled today, one was dead and the other had some green at the top but was dying so they weren't good trees.
The wife would like this down but the widowmaker has me holding off and hoping a good wind or harsh winter would take the widowmaker down but it's been three years and it's still up there.
That is definitely a dangerous tree. Be careful, brother. If I HAD to cut it, I think I would fell it in the direction of the widow maker...
That's the opposite way of the natural lean but a good idea, I'll see what trees if any are in that felling path. I've had some luck bringing those down with a shot gun and another that was just a waste of shells.
