What do I have here?

Here's some Eastern Hemlock I got this past October. I agree that the bark somewhat resembles the OP's pictures, but identification by bark alone can be misleading. After he split what he had, the grain didn't look like hemlock at all to me. In my experience it looks a lot like dimensional lumber grain, hence why around here I've heard it being called the Doug Fir of the East. Also hemlock would've had an unmistakable pitchy conifer smell to it.

 

This was some hemlock i split a couple years ago. The bark does resemble hemlock, but i say elm.
Anyone Burn Hemlock?

 

How easy was it to split ? Elm don't split easily.

 

White cream line in the bark and the beetle trails make a couple look like elm. Others... Not stuff we get around here. And not all elm splits that terrible.

 

Had to hit it a few times.

Just like the log, it will eventually split.

That does not look a bit like Virginia pine to me!! I had a timber sale this spring. I probably had 50 loads of Virginia pine cut, so I know what it looks like.

 

I was thinking hickory too...maybe even locust? Seeing the inside some look like locust to me some look like a hickory and I too also see Ash bark like others o. The one with the ax stuck in it .

 

There is a little bit of ash there. That I'm sure of.
