Hello all, I shoot a lot of corrosive, old military crap, Berdan primed and scrub my barrels after I'm done with a 75% water to 25% Ballistol mixture. I'm a huge fan of Ballistol and have been using it for years, especially for any storage time. Today I made another batch of (Ed's Red) gun sauce which I've been mixing up for 40 years. Glass Vodka bottles work well, I use this stuff on everything. Yeah, I have Hoppes #9 and some gun scrubber but I always go back to Ed's red. It leaves my bores beautiful after cleaning. The recipe is on line or I'll throw it out if you/anyone wants it. Do any of you use Ed's mixture? It's been around since WWII. *WARNING* be careful on nice wood finishes with Ed's. Acetone is kinda tough on them. Wipe fast if you get some on it. If this is your first read about Ed's red, do your homework and use caution with plastic gun parts as well.
I’ve heard of Ed’s red but never used it. I like the smell of Hoppe’s #9 too much to want to mix up some of Ed’s red juice.
Trust me, it won't have "POISON" written on it! I'm not the Vodka drinker, Chrissy is and I was waiting 2 weeks for that bottle I dropped my last Vodka bottle, (no handle) and broke it, I only had a very small amount left luckly.
Hoppes #9 , not sure it is the best for cleaning but without a doubt it is the best smelling ( to me anyway ). Born and raised on it , Dad always used it and I just can't break his tradition.

I've bought numerous cleaners. I don't exactly stick to one but Hoppes has good cleaners. I'm also using those cleaner lube mixes usually if I were at the range. Having not gone to the range in some time, not using these much but I have heard great things about Ballistol and bought a can recently. Maybe when it really needs it, I'll clean my black rifle with it and your solution. Off to Google I go.
