I was out spraying thistles/brush today when I saw this American Elm. It’s about 20” dia. from base to forks, it can wait till fall when it’s cooler to work up.

If it were mine I'd wait probably another year before cutting. I like most of the bark to fall off before cutting. The wood seem to get harder and definitely easier to split. It burns wonderful and much better than any charts give. I put it very close to oak.

Good find. As sticky as it's been here I believe I'd wait for fall as well.

These Siberian Elms are slated to be removed for a new corral but they are destined for the brush pile. I can’t even give this stuff away & I don’t like the way it burns either. So I guess that makes them future non firewood.

I've got enough elm much closer, but you never know...

I love dead standing elm. It's great wood for burning.

I found another future Elm candidate but I will have to keep an eye out for the secondary roads department, they bought a new brush shredding head for their excavator & have been running it pretty regularly this year. They will grind everything in that picture to a flush stump.

I've burned Siberian elm. It burned great. What didn't you like about it? It split very easily too.

It was really light after drying, burned fast & produced a bunch of ash.

It was pretty light after dry, but I didn't burn loads of only Siberian elm to notice if it left more ash than other species.
