So I’m going to sell a couple cords of firewood because the wife says we don’t have room for any more and well.. I might as well make a few bucks to fund my next saw! (400i ???) when’s the best time to sell? I’m thinking spring and summer. I’m guessing most sales will be for fire pits/camp fires.
Best time to sell here is late winter. Jan/feb even march. Folks run out and they need it now. But really October to February is busy busy. Your local market may differ. Who knows when winter comes each year? I also will tell you.... I sold a lot of wood and rarely will people pickup. Almost always delivery, sometimes stacking. The way to make a small fortune at woodcutting is to start with a large fortune. Always fun to invest in more tools! And keeps a guy busy.
I post in August and sell out my 8 cords by the end of September. Might be able to charge more in Jan or March but you have to keep it dry through the winter months. Thats a problem for me. A lot more work.
Looks like prices are all over the place in Sioux Falls. (marketplace and CL.) Dry,seasoned will get you the most $$$. February is a good time because most people need good wood and most regular sellers may be about out. Going the firepit/campfire wood route may net you more $$$ by selling smaller amounts. Good luck on the new saw.
I would have never guessed spring and summer being best time to sell firewood but you must be thinking fire pits and campfires are the market. If that is the case, I suppose so! And your sales revenue can/should be higher if you sell small quantities per sale. But, more time required unless you sell wholesale. For people who burn wood during winter, your sales period is late fall and winter. Good luck!
I might as well post some now on FBM and CL. Nothing to lose. Not to many burn wood inside around here. That’s why I’m guessing spring and summer will be better .
I’d prefer pick up. Of course I would deliver for a fee. I’m thinking $100 a truck load and $50 delivery fee. Not sure if I’ll sell much at that price, but it’s definitely way cheaper than the gas station crap!
I just don't have time to be cutting and splitting AND delivering. Sold 3 cords last week in 1/4 cord bins. Every one picked up. 2 guys did buy 2 bins worth. I may have lost a few sales over the years by not delivering.
It is a lot to juggle at once. Another reason I prefer to sell early, because once I’m sold out, I feel like I can focus on cutting.
