    My guess is smooth bark hickory? But I'm not sure, it's a odd tree for the area. It's getting burned.

    Id say hickory. Bitternut is the smoothest bark variety im aware of. Limbs and young trees of other hickories will have smooth bark. Regardless of which type its great firewood. Id season for at least two years. Any pics of the trunk bark at stump level Softwood ?

    BB I can get one for ya this weekend. The other half of the tree (split twin at the stump) is still standing. The downed part is all CSS already.:thumbs:

    I was thinking it was hickory but didn't know if it was maybe some sort of (different) nut tree.

    My first thought was hickory as well, I'm an amateur with that stuff besides shagbark though. Usually the weight is a give away too when you pick up a little limb and it's just oddly heavy.
