If its Box Elder, it looks a lot different than what I have been cutting around here the last few years...

Box elder has some phenotype differences for sure. I’ve cut some that was straight and looked like ash right near some that were crooked and resembled willow or some sort of large shrub lol. Same exact leaves, same exact species. If a tree as any decay, I almost always get the red streaks. If it’s healthy and young, I rarely see ‘em.

I’m not definitively saying this stuff is boxelder maple, but that’d be my first guess followed by a willow variety.

Also- stem branches are opposite so likely a maple family (boxelder).

:BrianK: Box elder, opposite branching and a red center. If you splash water on the centers that have turned brown from the air, they will show red again. Seasons quickly and burns like paper. Junk wood in my opinion.

Looks like Box Elder to me. Probably one of the ugliest trees there is but it burns.

I'm with Boxelder on this one. I would leave it as well unless I was short on firewood.

Its definitely not January overnight wood...but I have been burning some of my lower BTU wood so far this year (not much real cold weather here yet) I had some Red Oak mixed in there because it had some punk on it, mostly solid though...surprisingly I got more heat out of the BE than I did the oak...even the better pieces of oak! o_O

I have access to almost unlimited oak but I still love some low btu "junk" wood for shoulder season, kindling, and bringing a fire back to life. Especially if its close by or already bucked.
