So I got this silly app on my phone a while back. Supposed to be able to identify a tree or plant with a photo. I felled a big twin , what i thought was oak , that was hit by lightning years ago and been dropping branches and dying err since. While splitting I thought it was definitely not splitting like oak but chalked it up to it being a standing dead. Anyway, the app identified it as an elm and a fungus and a sweet gum. Anyone have any thoughts?

If it’s sweetgum there will be spiked balls all over the ground right now, but since it’s been dead awhile maybe not. Where there is one sweetgum there is usually more around. Is it a pia to split?

Only other sweet gum on the property is 1/4 mile away. I am familiar with that tree , no lawnmower projectile spikes balls !! Split super easy actually. I could get some pics of the splits tomorrow. I am really leaning towards a pin oak myself.

Those apps are not accurate at all in many cases

I think so too. It had a 1” or so layer of punky on the outside of some of the bigger pieces so maybe was just farther along the dying process than I thought.

My take is that it is def NOT sweetgum and my guess is it's an oak.

Show us an endgrain pic. That would tell if it was oak or not. Oak will have distinct rays. Bark has the look of oak to me.

It does have an oakey look to it. That would be my guess.
