I had questioned if it was BL or not and after viewing the splits i think its honey locust (reddish/pink heartwood) which is just as good a score. Idve been all over it either way.
Any thorns on the branches Dakota Hoarder ?

That looks like honey locust to me. In my experience it takes as long to season as oak. I have some css for 3 years and it still sizzled. I took it back out to dry for another year. Split it small, it’s awesome wood when it’s dry. Bugs like it to.

Wow that stinks! The black locust I've gotten seasoned super quick, some of it less than 9 months I think.

    It was free.

Not sure if he just had to post a dollar amount or what. I wasn’t even sure when I responded to the post. It even sounded like he just wanted somebody to split the wood for him. Either way it worked out and I’m going back ASAP!

I’m not exactly sure what type of Locust it is, there is some other hard wood mixed in the pile as well (maybe maple??). Not sure if honey locust grows around here. We just call them all locust around here. There are no thorns and I’ve never seen a full sized tree around here with thorns.
I’ll get some better pics next time for ID.

    Update...

Was planning on heading back to the pile today, but we’re having blizzard conditions. Tomorrow morning’s going to be cold and win so I’m out tomorrow also. I know ... fair weather hoarder, but a guys got to draw the line somewhere. I’ll get back there next week when the weather’s in the 20’s

Dont blame you there DH. I wouldve been in the house watching the snow. At least you dont have to worry about someone else working "your" score! Good rain here tomorrow into Christmas will get rid of the snow cover here.

Yah, I guess we’ll have a white Christmas, well kind of white, most of the snow is blown into piles. Guess we’ll call it similar-white!

is it normal for you to get rain in the end of December?

Great score Dakota! I'm 150 miles north of you just off I29. Just came in from moving a little now...the wind was something to hear all night! Power off here from 4:30 am to 6:30 am. Sounds like the traffic down in your area had some problems today on both 29 and 90.
I was splitting and stacking yesterday, (ash and some poplar) reached 52*; did not go outside today until the snow stopped....the wind is still blowing it around though...probably move it again in the morning. 5* now at 6:00.
If USPS and UPS weren't so backed up, I'd have you ship a couple splits up here...love to try some locust in a couple years!:D:dex:

Here in Southern New England our Winters are realtively mild compared to what the rest can get. We can have snow as earl as October and sometimes not see any snow til mid January. Last year was almost anon snow event. Couple minor storms (one in November) plus a few dustings and that was it. Hardly got cold enough to freeze the ground. Mud for the most part.
The coming storm will generate up to hurricane force winds so maybe power outages. Dont know how Santa is going to handle it?!
To answer your question, not unusual to see rain in December.

I guess if someone gets to it before you, it sounds like they’ll have earned it from your description of the weather!
