What thermometers are best for indoor/outdoor operation? I bought one a few years ago but the thing doesn't always work during the colder months. Even now with lows in the 20's it won't show the outdoor temp. Batteries are good and the sensor and the display are less than 20 feet apart. I am thinking a La Crosse Technology unit would be better. What say you?

I've got a lacrosse and it works well so far. I got it for father's day, so it hasn't yet seen temps under the mid twenties yet.

Seems a bit odd that an outdoor thermometer won't work in the.....wait for it.......outdoors. :headbang:

It's a wireless remote controller sized dongle/FOB. I just set mine in a window sill on the non sunny side of the house.

Horkn I have my outdoor sensor mounted outside the kitchen window. If your sensor is outdoors, is it fastened somehow?

It simply sits on the window sill outdoors. There's a screw hole so you can screw it into whatever to keep it where is supposed to be.

With my luck, it would blow away if left unsecured. There is a screw head slot in the back of the sensor.

a + for the lacrosse, i've had my indoor/outdoor for almost 4yrs and its a little off on the cooler temps, but, it might be where i put the outside sensor, could be a warmer spot. Mine shows indoor/outdoor temps, humidity on both Date, Time, and day of the week. Plus it shows the forecast in the center window as well as the temps going up or down via blue arrow, or red if warmer i believe it is.

I found some Velcro the other day as well, I could use that to secure it.

I'm thinking I'll use a piece of scrap of PT lumber and make a stake with a "roof" on it so that the FOB stays dry. I do think that once in a while it gets warmer than real readings from being on the window sill.

If the outdoor sensor uses AA batteries get some Lithium ones - they work much better in the cold.

I've used a cheap Accurite for 5-6 years now and never had an issue. I think I got it on sale for less than <$30 and I only change the batteries every couple of years.

I wouldn't put the fob right next to a window though - a lot of warm air transfers.

I am trying to remember what I had but the unit used a probe for outside.

It's a new window, but I think it is not making ratings accurately due to the window placement. Maybe I'll make the stake for the sensor to go onto today. The ground isn't frozen yet, so it's a good time to do it

I have my outdoor sensor tucked up by the soffit (under the eave), on the north side of my house. No direct sun and out of any precipitation.

I have a basic Acurite wireless unit. Paid about $30 on sale at TSC.

Other than replacing the batteries (2 x AAA outside and 2 x AA inside) every other year, I've had no issues for about the last 6-7 years. Had a similar unit before that lasted about 10+ years.

I keep the outside unit on the front porch window sill on the north side of the house. Gets some snow blown around it periodically but for the most parts its out of the direct sun/rain which maybe adds to it's longevity.

I've got the Lacrosse indoor/outdoor with the atomic clock.
It worked good for many years, but I think the outside temp sensor is off a couple degrees now.

I put the sensor where it stay shaded on the north side of the house.
