Found out Sailrmike was hitting the score so made the trip to meet up. Less than 15 minutes for me. I called the orchard this morning and six acres of trees pushed over. Drive in and cut what you want at your convenience. Ended up chatting for a while. Smaller trunks with a lot of work for little wood. IMG_3533.JPG Mike's SUV and trailer through the trees. The ground was rutted up from the backhoe that pushed the trees over. IMG_3531.JPG
Porta potties in the distance. Didnt check the bases brenndatomu IMG_3534.JPG
I didnt cut much. Probably the gnarliest wood you'll ever see me take. IMG_3535.JPG IMG_3536.JPG
Not every day you get to cut in an orchard. Scratch this off my hoarding bucket list.

6 acres you say?! Does that mean I have a shot at getting at least a couple twigs before it’s all gone? :)

It was a lot of work for a little wood. The rows of trees were impressive and it looked hardly touched.
    Are you considering getting some?

Definitely. I might head down tomorrow for one load anyway. Kind of hard to pass on easy pickings for what I consider specialty wood.

Haha yeah I know those trees are mostly gnarly limb wood. I don’t mind though considering I can drive right up and go to town. Get it home and run it all through the splitter ASAP before it gets too tough. I’m more concerned about how I’m going to stack it. Maybe just build a bin from pallets and toss it all in.

Lol! You ain't lying. Wait till you hand split this stuff...
They are small ones! Typically those are right at my cut-off limit for size. It's so much better to have a helper to pull limb. Are you allowed to just let limbs lay or do they ask you to pile them up?

Here's pics of the metal I've hit in apple.

Hard to "like" that one Jason. They had some type of plastic ties in them. Him and i did see sparks while cutting. I think it was dirt on my end. His may have been metal as the cut had some stains typical of metal.

You guys have me all worried about metal now... I think I’ll bring my little Echo CS370 and a couple spare chains and hope for the best. I’d rather not trash the chains for my Stihl as I just got done putting a fresh edge on them.

It was great meeting buZZsaw BRAD up at the orchard today. On the way home, I stopped to check my strap over the wood (ive had a lot of straps come loose after load settles, happened towing a boat this summer!) and my phone slipped out of my pocket, and didn't realize 'till I got home lol. So I did two round trips to Wallingford today, but at least my phone is working after being driven over!! I'm such a bonehead sometimes lol. Looking forward to the next orchard scrounge!

This is awesome! I'm so glad you guys made it for mini meet up! Sorry I wasn't around; I would have swung by. That's very close to where I live. Looks like you guys did good with the score! I was amazed with how many trees they took down. There's a lot of wood there for the picking.

When I was there mid week, only a few trees had been cut.

I was snickering to myself when you guys went full "hoard on" for the apple trees. As buZZsaw BRAD now realizes, a lot of work for not much wood. This is what I did with my 28 apple trees when I was transitioning over to tall spindle. As soon as i pulled in and saw them i really didnt want any. Trees were on the small side. I was there and said WTH might as well cut some. Ended up chatting more than anything. At least your trees were big so more volume to be had. They are converting the orchard to the type you mentioned. I saw some rows of them.

Row after row. I got one decent load so far and plan on at least one more. Right away I see why buZZsaw BRAD didn't take much. This is a hand splitter’s nightmare! I’m glad I have hydraulics otherwise I’d pass on this. Very cool score though, thanks for the heads up Skier76 .
