While delivering a load of gravel to a ranch I was eyeing several standing dead elms that I’d like to have, and figured I could if I asked. Just as I was getting to the gate I ran into the daughter and son in law of the old gal that owns the place. (She is 86 I think)
They said I could probably get the elms, but there is a big pile of logs they would like cleaned up first. Ok. Daughter also said it would be great firewood because it is dry and has been there a couple years.
So yesterday I loaded up my best helper (12 year old granddaughter) my new to me 346xp and the 562 and went to check it out. 8333C78B-17C2-4DC5-B707-71F9409E8FB5.jpeg E4109229-EC08-457D-AA65-5EDEDC7B1236.jpeg 2C795C01-C59A-471A-8205-930DD6CC165B.jpeg C56BFE3F-CC8D-493D-9A3F-6B83D9474A0D.jpeg FF398FA8-8534-4AB5-9DE1-A952E60AAF22.jpeg the old gal heard us working and stopped down to visit a bit. She said 3 trees came down in a storm earlier this year. Apparently I started on the fresher trees because they are very green. The the other side of the pile looks to have been there longer.
I don’t even want to guess how much is there, but it’s a bunch. Probably try to get some of it to the shop at work on company time.
I’ll try to keep this updated as I work on it

Hackberry is not bad wood, just under ash in the BTU department. I've burned a lot of it. In my catalytic stove I can get 8 to 10 hours on a load. But if it's not split and stacked fairly quickly it will begin to rot. You may see some punky stuff in the older pile of logs, especially on the bottom of the pile. But even if you loose a couple to rot it's still a great score! Way to go!:salute:

As for your granddaughter; like my wife says: I run like a girl, try to keep up! You go girl!

I love it when a new score multiplies.

Nice! Love me some hackberry... get it split and she’ll dry good.... let it sit rounds, it can decay pretty fast... minus a bit of strings on split... it’s good fire wood...

Your Granddaughter looks like a go getter’... no BS type...:rootintootin:

Nice haul. Your helper reminds me of my best helper. The best help I get is my 14 year old niece, she has been helping me for a couple years. She will work circles my nephews 13 & 18. My 8 year niece is pretty good help also.

Now you just need a bigger truck to carry more. Yep, time to go shopping for a truck and bigger saw. Maybe package deal?

Heck of a score. Lots of wood there. I like to burn it. Mother Nature usually gives me some every year.

I have a bigger pickup and trailer. Next time the 372 will go along also. I have the equipment to make a big haul. This was mostly a scouting or survey mission. Plus I had a new saw that needed to be tried out.

Great score SHB! Aint it great when you ask and the potential score turns into a boatload of wood! Great helper and great pics. Be sure to take the 266 next trip! :saw:

The 266 threw a fit trying to drop that ugly cottonwood. Haven’t had a chance to look at it yet.
The heap of hackberry is gonna have to wait a little while. I need to get my stacks topped off with wood I can burn this season. I got my eye on a couple standing dead elms to deal with first
