This wood is from the same yard as the honey locust i took yesterday and Tuesday. Went back for the walnut today and decided to take this too. All i had to do was load it up. The tan heartwood reminds me of the catalpa i recently scored but this was a noticeably heavier. Hand split easily, even the gnarlies. I checked around the stump area and there were no catalpa bean pods. The yard is kept very tidy so they couldve been raked up. Any idea FHC? Just did some research and it could be butternut (my guess when i first saw it the other day) aka white walnut?
Looks like elm to me. But I’m not 100% sure on that. Contrary to popular belief - I’ve actually split a lot of elm by hand, so it’s possible.
I dont think its catalpa. A tale of three catalpas I hate to say it but splits and rounds in the first pic look like poplar to me.
When i split the first one i thought so, but it had too much weight compared to the pieces i scrounged roadside a month ago. That was fresh cut and green. The texture and weight, as ive said before, of it remind me of sassafras, but this no. It smelled like catalpa Barcroftb could this be butternut? aka white walnut? I did some quick research last night and the bark seemed to match. This was a planted yard tree so could be some type of hybrid.
Looks like Tulip to me buZZsaw BRAD . Heavy as hell when its wet, light as a feather when dry. I did a buddy a favor and cleared some from his yard for him. When you split it do you notice the bark to be brown and stringy?
Wasnt tulip. Cut a big tulip last December. Not a Poplar Score With Me! Bark came off intact chunk on the stump cut off.
Plausable. It still looks off to me for white walnut. But regional variations make tree identification more tricky without leaves and twigs. Are those twigs in the first pic from the same tree? If you have them still can you split and take pics? Should have a pith similar to black walnut. Its definitely not black or English though. Shame it went to firewood if it is white walnut.
Id have to check. A am familiar with the BW pith as i recently learned on here. They felled 4-5 yard trees and bunched all the brush in one pile so i couldnt be sure if that was from the same tree. When i saw the yard and the trees they felled i was surprised. The trees were very healthy (except for the two EAB infected ashes)and well maintained by prior homeowners (bought house last Fall). Wife wanted them gone though!
Still have yet to determine what this is. I was looking at the stack of splits recently and wondering. Yellowish green wood in the stack. The bark holding on for the most part.
