    I was going to say Hickory looking at the first end grain pic. Bark look a lot like American elm.

    American elm was what I initially thought it was, but the heartwood seems different than the normal elm I have ran into.

    Looks very much like the Elm we have here. Is it kind of slimy when a strip of bark peels off?

    I have run into a couple of Elms that look just like that, both splits and bark. I have been known to noodle into manageable pieces.

    The bark and the size of the growth rings look a bit like spruce as well as the description and pics of the splits. The "slimy" part throws me off but the non stinky descriptor brings it back into focus.

    So...........I say Spruce(blue).

    Looks similar to American elm but the stuff I've dealt with is more stringy. Hackberry is related to elm I believe.
    Let us know if you get a positive. I am stumped but will go out on a limb and guess hackberry.
