Here’s a cutting board I made for a relative. 3 inch thick end grain oak. The finish is still wet in one pic. Would have been finished w beeswax. I’m just sorry that it is useless, have to remake. Note the closeup of white oak closed pores on the bottom of 2nd pic, and open-grain pores of red oak on the top. Pores an excellent means of holding bacteria. Somehow, for the first time, I ended up with a 4x6 of red oak, didn’t notice till finished sanding. It had issues anyway. Darn.
Hi. Thanks. I have a lot of anger issues so I wanted to throw it out, but wife thinks it’ll make a fine plinth for a statue or something similar. I guess she’ll do that, as long as I don’t have to see it every day.
Thanks. But it’s discouraging enough to scrap a project early in process, but at finish sanding, waah. I’m starting remake today.
Well, not sure of your age, but I've gone well past the stage of letting that stuff bother me. Sure, don't need a daily reminder, but if I fretted over every mistake, I'd be crazier than I already am. Finding a good use for it still saves a beautiful piece of handiwork.
A lot of time and work went into that. Sorry that red oak snuck in there on you. Good on you to realize it's not safe to use. But still...damm.
Thanks. Youre correct. There sure is a lot more work than meets the eye, in a cutting board done properly. And it’s quite a surprisingly tall stack of lumber before problem pieces are culled.
