Our DNR issued this today: Ice conditions may prompt early removal of fishing shanties And of course every year people will have to be rescued from ice floes on the great lakes or bays. Some never learn.
We dont have to worry about that round here! But saw some daffodils blooming the other day. Calling for us to get a dusting to 2 inches of snow tomorrow evening/night. It has been a relatively mild one here as well, but we may not be done yet. We have had some significant (for around here) snows in late Fed / early March. Hopefully everything will behave since we're almost in the home stretch.... just hope we can have some actual spring this year...
crocus and vinca blooming and the red wing black birds have returned ( some of them have ) sunset is around 5:30 now
I spent some time over at Mom's the last few days and Spring has arrived. Even though we have been getting frost in the morning, her home is on an island surrounded by water. Her house faces south so this is what is happening in her garden. All her bulbs go a little wild and find their own places to be. Her Christmas rose is blooming in two places in the yard. Snowdrops have been out for a while. Keeping warm by the wood.
Miss July planted some bulbs last fall that came out of planters at one of their stores out east. They came up weeks ago.
If they haven't started throwing flower stems up yet they should be OK. If they have flower stems or even flowers standing up then a blanket thrown over them at night or during the cold spell might save the flower/stem. Most are fairly hardy and can take a frost and even a freeze, but real cold, like down to zero and persist for a while can ruin a flower.
That's how the wild crocuses are here. Come up everywhere and anywhere. I had some I dug up planting something else, put them aside and promptly forgot about them. Noticed they were sprouting a day or two ago and just checked them now and they're not waiting on me to find them some dirt. They're quick.
Amazing. Buds on trees. Flowers all over. It might be a while before we see that sort of thing. However, it has happened in the past so maybe....
Lost more than one good person in the community to getting their shanty off of the ice and both falling through. As they get tired, they tie the rope around their middle to help pull. Sad. Mrs. JW showed me some bulbs sprouting last night as we walked from the barn and stove (I cleaned the ashes out last night out of the OWB). Only 1 55 gallon barrel of ashes this time!!
Not sure weather to click the like button on this. Don't like seeing that you lost people but do like that you are seeing signs of spring. We had a few around here take a swim , no losses that I heard of. Saw a few out in the upper part of the state but no way I would take the risk on the ice we have had. Reports of only 4 inches is not enough for me; that 4 inches could be less if there are springs or any currents under the ice. No thanks , I will wait for kayak season and if weather keeps going the direction it has been it looks like it might be an early season.
We do not know what to expect next. Near zero one day and 40 degrees 2 days later. Just have to wait and see what happens. Remember last year farmers could not get out in the fields for weeks because of all the standing water. Even tiled fields were way too wet.
Just put a sail on that kayak and go out on the ice. If it breaks through, no problem. We hear of snow machines going through the ice every year along with pickups and cars and whatever. On the bays, people go out on windy days and then the ice breaks up and floats out to the open water with them stranded. All sorts of baloney. I remember especially the bay by Escanaba. It is hard to believe all the stuff that would go through the ice every spring.
