A sugar maple stump cut off i scrounged Summer of 2018. Drove an hour and a half across Connecticut with a PU full of wood including this! Still cant believe i got it on my truck in one piece by myself! Dont use it as often as i should and noodle on it more than anything. What do you FHC folks have for one?
I have some crotch pieces that I've cut flat on both ends. I have a few around the wood yard. I try to split near where I'm stacking.
Nice block Buzzsaw. I’ve got a big fat hemlock round that’s been through a few hand splitting sessions. Will see some action soon when I split some ash to fill in the wood stack at the sugar house.
I was using a pine stump for a while, but the last time I used it a round went thru it. Full of termites. The only thing I have right now is the bottom round of a spruce tree that is far too heavy to pick up. Still working on splittting the last of the spruce rounds I have. I split some pine by hand, but they pop easy and I've doing those on the ground as they don't have to be whacked very hard and the one or two that the maul gets stuck in just gets persuaded to finish on a granite rock nearby. Splittin by hand isn't good for my back but I've been doing a little lately because, feeling good. Plus, dragging the splitter out for a few minutes of daylight really isn't worth it and I'm not leaving it out with a tarp over it. It'll never get put away if I start that routine.
Welcome to the FHC lumberjohn Great to have you on board. Glad you finally decided to join us! Lots of knowledge, good and bad humor here. I fall into all three of those catagories...sometimes more than the other! Ive never tried the tire method in 40 years of hand splitting. My landlord has a huge stack of them and ill hafta scrounge one and give it a try. Nice looking pile of wood BTW!
Here's where I do all my splitting, everything by hand right now, hoping to buy a gas splitter within the next year Sent from my SM-G975U using Tapatalk
Brad I’ve always used rear 4wheeler tires, that’s my third or fourth. I hadn't cut the sidewall out yet at that time. It has really been a relief to my back not having to bend over after every swing. Added a Fiskars hookaroon last year which was another huge relief.
very nice set up Mag Craft . I especially like the wedge with the built in handle. Is that your own idea/invention?
Yes I welded the handle on. It was just a cheap wedge and some scrap pipe and then wrapped it with pipe insulation and duct tape. Works good.
Although I use hydraulics now I did split wood probably for more years than most on this forum have split wood. I admit that I did try a splitting block and hated it. Therefore I did all the splitting on Mother Earth. It did not matter to me if the ground was frozen or not; I'd just split the wood and I believe it saved time not having to mess with a splitting block.
I seldom use it anymore and mostly split on the ground as well. I was working in my main PA that day and thought it'd be cool to post pics and see what everyone else does. This one is only a foot high which helps when i do use it!
