I split an entire trees worth of sweet gum a few years back. Never again. I'm not into self punishment.

All of the Sweetgum I’ve tried to split..well it didn’t really split it just ripped apart. They’re almost invasive where I live. Just stack where they’ll get plenty of sun because they do hold there moisture awhile, but it’ll burn ok once dry. Hey you got it free might as well burn it:dex:

I'm glad you decided to keep and process it. one thing I've learned is to never complain or turn your nose up to any wood from a tree service. they don't like hearing complaints. also in my experience, one load might be cottonwood. for which, I told them "this is exactly what i needed!! Thank you!!!" ... the next load was all oak... they call me a year later and ask are you looking for any (insert wood name here) I replied, "yes!! that is exactly what i needed!!!" then they said, "some of it has metal sticking out of it." Then I replied, "I was looking for some pieces with metal sticking out of it. that way I can use those to stack the rest of the logs on. please bring me those too."

I got 4 loads of oak and hickory the next year.

Shiitake mushrooms grow well on sweetgum. Not sure how I forgot to mention that being as I drilled in about 900 plug spawn this weekend. Beats the hell out of splitting it

Oh I wouldn't bitch at my tree guy for dropping it. He usually drops me red oak. I'd simply buck it up and put it by the side of the road, then post it on Craigslist or Facebook marketplace....
