Been spying this standing dead red oak in my GF's moms woods since July when i cut up a fallen dead hickory. See my thread Hickory Dickory Dock, this little score does ROCK! About 40' separated the two. We've had a couple good wind storms. her mom tells me theres a tree over in the woods...turned out this one. Took the 261 to see what if any decent wood could be had. Not a big fan of standing dead unless barkless, but wood is wood. Preliminary indication wasnt good based on hollow stump and picture of #2! Well maybe this wood isnt worth a $@#% I thought. Laid out my marks, fired up the saw and the red meat was good under a narrow band of punky sapwood. Bucked the trunk back toward the stump and hit a nail. First with this chain since ive used the saw new in 2 1/2 months. Wasnt too happy about it of course. Had the top part to buck yet, so rather than go back and put the other new unused chain on i tried it as was. Surprised it still cut okay, not great but good enough to finish. lots of warning signs of metal classic in oak. When i came home i was telling Ms. buZZsaw about the nails and she tells me her dad had built a tree house in that tree years back for her brothers. Now she tells me I debarked most of the logs with the Collins axe and found another nail! Better than with the saw i guess. Halved a couple in one swing. Still good oak smell and rather wet. Dunno if it will dry in time for use this burning season. What you say Woodwhore ? You like standing dead. Next two pics of what it yielded. Not quite a face cord. blurry pic, sorry. Last pic (blurry again) is of bottom round with ant infestation. Some type or red ants. Too cold and they were barely moving. A feast for birds tomorrow! Ill SS and season there.
If it still had bark on it, it’s not gonna be ready.. that oak will probably still need a couple years... I’ve had my best luck with standing dead oak that has lost its bark AND most of the sapwood has rotted and fallen off the tree..
Agree with others. Not ready to burn this season. Dead oak can dry relatively fast but not that fast.
It's easy to do. I've gone back and edited by cutting it out of the quote space and pasting it back into the response space. More than once. I've clipped an end tag bracket a time or two as well
I cut with it after i hit the nail and it was okay, not great, but a good filing should do the trick. The chain saw gods were on my side.
