Love Joy coupling on Huskee log splitter

    I had to replace the Love Joy coupler between the hydraulic pump and engine on the Huskee/Speeco log splitter. The coupler was worn to the point of failure.
    The engine is the Briggs and Stratton 6.75 HP with a 7/8" shaft. The pump is a Speeco with a 1/2'' shaft.

    There are 3 parts total.
    (2) coupler halves and (1) synthetic rubber insert.
    The coupler was a 3/4" coupler. I'm not sure if Tractor Supply had the 3/4" couplers in stock but Ryan suggested I upgrade to the 1" coupler as it is heavier duty. It was a pretty straight forward replacement. Needed to remove the four bolts (with a 1/2" wrench and socket) that held the pump in place, and one set screw on each coupling half (using an 1/8" allen wrench). The coupling half on the pump shaft was a little tight and the shaft seemed to move in and out of the pump pretty easy so I used a puller to get it off rather than prying it and risking damaging the pump.

    Ya, the danged things do tend to break at times. Can be nasty to fix if they don't come apart good.

    2 years ago my splitter had the same problem
    searched here and there were no posts on repair
    here is the thread
    Love joy sheared on splitter

    both halves were on really tight
    engine one came off fine with puller
    pump half barely had room for puller- I had to grind it down a little
    Best tip from someone was to use grinder to cut into bad Lovejoy to better attach puller instead of modifying puller

    I put the metal halves back on with anti seize. Use a hose clamp to get the alignment exact, they last longer that way.

    Well, sometimes it starts over dinner at a fine resteraunt, sometimes after a movie, or even in a bar after too many drinks... OH wait, that's a love, joy coupling, my bad (other forum)!

    You mean the coupling to transfer rotational power from an output shaft to an input shaft to isolate vibration and ensure alignment issues don't cause premature failures.

    you can save some money by changing the rubber piece before the metal cogs start touching each other as well i do that on my little tractor because i welded the coupler piece on the front pto shaft

    If you upgrade to a hytrel spider you will probably get longer life.

    About this Love Joy Coupler. I have a 20 ton Tractor Supply splitter, I bought it used, and I have had to replace the Love Joy coupler twice already and it just broke again. Obviously something else is wrong with the splitter. Anyone have any ideas?

    It's probably an alignment issue, these are typically pretty forgiving though.

    My engine bolts came loose one time.
    I'd guess that made mine wear prematurely. It made a lot of noise like it was missing or running rough
