I have been burning pellets for just over 20 years. Use to burn Golden Fire pellets, but they are getting harder to find here. For the last few years, we have been burning Bear Mountain pellets and have had good luck with them. But sometimes my local supplier runs out near the end of the season. I was as TSC the other day and seen they had this brand. I had never see them before and wondered if anyone has burned them. TSC usually has pellets longer in the season than most other places in the area. If the are good, it will be a good backup for my usual supplier. Thanks.
$5.49 per bag for Douglas Fir pellets.... I know we New Englanders would be all over that in a heart beat.
I imagine the shipping to you guys is a big factor. Lots of the Doug Fir pellets are made out here in the West.
Yes, we in the Northeast have to suffer with the “rare” pine tree to make pellets and the higher price they demand for such a scarce tree here versus your Douglas Fir out there. Pay no attention to the fact that we have the Pine Tree State (Maine), the most heavily forested State as a percentage of land mass (New Hampshire) and the Green Mountain State (Vermont). If propane and natural gas costs here were the same as the rest of the country, then the price per ton for pellets would be comparable to those in most other areas of the country. Basically they are priced to what the market will bear.
To give you an idea, there is a store over in RI selling that exact product for $389/ton. Fortunately, we have a few other products that are similar and cost much less.
A new tsc opened near me last week. They had lignetics in their brand. Only had 30 bags as they are waiting for more shipments.
burned some of the Olympus last winter... excellent Doug Fir...maybe a tick or 2 below the original Okanagan Doug Firs.
Just called my supplier yesterday to see if he had pellets. Headed down today to get a ton of Bear Mountains. Same price as last year, $279.00/ton. These have worked good for us over the last several years.
The Olympus here, are $379. They sell very well. It was a huge surprise, to see how many people just say "I don't care, I want them, they are that good"... I remember discussing them with Henry (the owner), and suggested "let's order 3 or 4 ton, to see if there is any interest.. If they don't sell.. we can use them" That was many, many, truckloads ago.. Dan
The irony is great. We burn wood at our weekend place in VT. You can find free pine all over the place; especially in CT. People just give it away. Pine pellets...you pay a big premium.
I seen Olympus here st TSC yesterday. They were $249.95/ton Was going to buy some, but didn't know if they were good or not. Are they? Ended up going to my regular guy who normally carry's Bear Mountain. Yesterday he had Golden Fire which was my go to pellet when we started burning pellets over 20 years ago, but they got hard to find. I think Bear Mountain and Golden Fire are basically the same pellet. They were $279.95/ton
you guys are lucky in the fact that you are so close to the douglas firs... back here in the east we end up paying 350 and up for those firs..
I've used them a few years ago , an excellent pellet but to expensive for me . We have other choices just as good in my opinion
How true. I'm amazed how , and only as example, Vermonts are over 300 a ton, locally produced, and more expensive than other pellets trucked in for hundreds, or thousands of miles ( even canada).
I see a lot of pine cut up north. Maybe they mill it? There’s a ton of land there in the Current Use program. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
At that price I don't think you can go wrong , but take it with a grain of salt as I have never toasted Bear Mtn.
