The nearest neighbor on the north side here is about 200 yards or so away, hope it's far enough if this is a problem. His old house is some type of frame house (some kind of wood product material), and it's kind of cream or light yellow color. I have noticed for many months, maybe even couple of years, that it has a burnt orange or rust color on it that dissipates from the ground up. In other words, it's more of this rust color towards the bottom and it thins upward. Imagine someone took a giant air brush and sprayed rust colored paint on it. I always thought that this looked odd but I just figured it was dirt because soils right around here are nothing but red clay.

Ok, now, over the past few months, I noticed a hickory tree whose leaves turned brown, it's dead, so, I'm wanting to ask him if he wants me to take it. I could never catch him there because I have learned they moved away! Over these months, I have looked at it often as I drive by and noticed...

Ornamental bushes and long hedges have taken on this same burnt orange rust color and they appear to be dead. Two big oaks are dead. And... the hickory has a splash of this rust stuff on the trunk about chest high, maybe 3-4 square feet of this color.

What the heck could this be? Is there concern it could drift to my place? My gf is the one who told me they moved away and I said, "Heck, they may have gotten scared of this rust stuff!" Because I always wondered why he didn't just wash his house. (Recall I thought it was dirt.) I wondered should the mayor be aware of this and talk to this fellow about taking care of it? I've noticed he mows his yard and has bushhogged his pasture, so, he does come around.

    Anyone got an idea?

Pic? Yea would be helpful. I was thinking dirt splash, but you rarely see that higher than say 4 foot. Then I was thinking he irrigated and water had a huge iron content or it was sucked from a muddy pond, but that doesn't explain it in a tree? I'm sure you would of said he has a rusty metal roof if so.

Probably a mold that thrives with moisture and dead plant material.
Would be more dense closer to the ground.

Sounds like some kinda algae that forms when you get standing water and less air in your bathroom. But we do need a picture or two.

Wow, that is an EXCELLENT guess. I don't know if he has sprinklers. He is just outside the city limits by about 100 ft BUT he could be on city water because I am just south of him and have city water. The city water wouldn't do that. But someone with well water with an iron 'problem' would. I am hesitant to go snapping pictures, it's private property but I might be able to get a shot from the road shoulder. Although, I don't know how much it will help. I actually would like to get to that tree bark or a shrub and check it out up close.

EDIT: Now that I think back, your guess is exactly what I first thought about when I noticed it on his house. It looked just like what a sprinkler system would leave. And now I recall he DOES have sprinklers close to his house. He had a lot of flowers. As for the shrubs and the trees, I dunno about sprinklers on all of it.

This is what I said several posts back. I think I said "stains from irrigation and heavy iron in water..or from muddy pond" something to that degree?

You can have irrigation on well water and city water for your house, or he may not have ever tapped into the city.

As far as pics, you can take pics of anything from public property (exception is military and national security type stuff) no matter if it's private or not? So standing on the road shoulder in the country ROW you can take pi s of his house. If you give us the address I bet I can pull up pictures of it from Google and other sources. I am not saying you have to give the address just that pics of this place likely already exist on the internet.

    I am really curious now.

I don't think sprinklers would be killing trees...unless the water is contaminated or running constantly to drown them.

Heavy mineral water would not kill trees. I guess I missed the part about things dieing?

We have a bad drought the end of this summer, many trees are stressed and dieing from that. Also many red oaks in the area are dieing, from what most of us guess is many drought years combined in the last decade or two.

it is your neighbor, why not just walk over and talk to them??

hey, how you doin? I noticed all this red stuff on your landscaping, I was wondering what is it?

Oh, that, it is a biological fungus, kills everything it touches, that's why we moved out. I guess I should of told you but.............................

Here are a couple photos. In the second pic, the hickory tree with rusty stain about chest high up on trunk is near middle of pic, it's close to that railing. You can also see rusty stain on house and also on bushes near the railing. I am thinking that this is iron from maybe he has a water well and has lawn irrigation? I can't just walk over and talk, he moved away and is rarely there. Again, reason I got suspicious is because of trees and bushes dying/dead.

I would say yes that mineral stain from his water. That doesn't look like the normal type home with irrigation, at least from the pic. But who knows why people do what?

It's not all the way around the house. My guess would be that's where his sprinklers hit.

Clay in the ground? Run off from the roof and then splashing onto the hose?
