a fair amount of younger peoples joinin FHC n burnin wood. Brings a smile on my face when you start to see more people in there 20's n 30's on here. They are the ones that will keep the tradition (so to speak) goin when us kooks are to old or gone...just sayin
Always loved it as a kid and as a graduate student with a family I can save 2500-3k a year in heating costs with some hard work. Plus the house will be warmer than ever. No point in burning oil and using electricity when there are dead trees to use up.
I hated firewood with a passion when I was young. My dad burned wood as far back as I can remember. Now I find myself with probably 30 cords, and I supply him since he’s getting older. My son used to help and not complain but being 19, he’s got more important stuff to do. Time will tell. I did get him addicted to the ported saw fad. Mr.Lee did him up a 365sp and he loves it. Now I run it more than he.
The Wood Wolverine when he has his own house and gets a wife.. She wants heat he will and cover you!!
Who you calling old bear 1998? I like to have my left turn signal on when I drive, that don’t make me old!
I'm 38, but also grew up with wood heat! Since I was about 10 or 11, I used to drive an old Kubota to haul firewood down from the field! It's in me bones now.
my two story total electric house can get to 1200 bucks a month when the temperatures get to sub 20 f. I have some pretty good thermal windows too. No drafts at all. neighbor, who has a boiler, has propane, and the costs were crippling him. I have bought some good equipment to keep my firewood stock up to demand. the return on investment has been immediate for me. The money spent the first year for the boiler, had a savings of thousands from November to end of April.
Army buddy lives 3/4 mile away. His monthly budget Propane is $400 a month for heat and hot water. This is all about a 1200 square-foot cape built in the 80s
3 tanks of oil for the main living area to keep it in the low 60s and electric in our secondary area was about $250 from November until April. House is only 1600 sq feet and built in the 80s
Indeed Bear it is good to get more younger folks involved. That is needed in all things. And when I read about some of these folks how much it costs them to heat their homes it really makes me wonder why more people don't burn wood. As for me, In less than 2 weeks I'll turn 77 and except for just a very few years have heated with wood all my life. I remember even as a young lad wanting to help the men getting firewood. Of course I was involved early on with the stacking and also keeping wood on the back porch; that was a daily chore which I never seemed to mind. Also the stacking; it amazes me how many on this forum seem to despise the wood stacking and with some it shows by the looks of their stacks. But I've never minded it and just took it as one more necessary step in putting up firewood. I have often wondered just how many dollars we've saved over the years by heating with wood and know it would be many, many thousands of dollars. That suits me just fine. I enjoy putting up firewood and enjoy having a warm home in the winter and then get the bonus of saving lots of money.
Not only that but the pleasure i get from making it is PRICELESS in my book! Sometimes I dont realize how much enjoyment it gives me.
Amen to all. Firewood used to be a dreaded chore. Occurred to me if I made it a hobby instead it would be fun. Amen to the youngers coming along. It’s a tradition of the highest caliber.
Holy carp, with my stove going in the winter ($24 for a 4-cord Forest Service permit plus associated travel costs), my electric AND natural gas bill in Montana is around $120-140 per month for a 1,000 sq. ft. house. More during Christmas because I put up a few hundred big C9 lights. I can't imagine paying those rates!
