We had a big storm here on Sunday. 47Mph winds and a months worth of rain in one day! Dad had a gum tree come down narrowly missing his hay stack. There were two other Blackwood (acacia) trees that had a bad lean over a fence. I got up early this morning and cleaned them up before work. The Gumtree was an easy one. But the Blackwood was a little challenging to do without destroying the old fence. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Wow what is that blackwood stuff how does it burn? Really interesting stuff to see trees from other places not normally harvested. Nice load to see!!
The Blackwood is a type of acacia it is short lived but fast growing, it's now considered in some parts of the world an invasive species. It's a hardwood quite dense the bark is hard and quite abrasive on ya hands. It splits and burns quite well. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Now that you mention acacias, Im guessing that this may be in a family that would include Locusts, honey and black. Black locust is rampant around my area I'm astounded but its worth harvesting when you get it. Burns hot so Im told. Coveted among those who often burn softwoods for any measure. No dramas bringing that one down ?
I did get the bar of my pole saw pinched at one stage but other than that no problems. And the fence survived. I bucked the whole tree up while it was still standing, well leaning. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Yes it looks great but rarely grows straight enough to make it commercially viable to mill. Some people make nice furniture from it. Here is a fresh split. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
