OK this one's definitely got me curious. I have a decent stack of larger apple logs - up to 8" in diameter and 16-20" long. Obviously I'm not gonna toss one of them on the fire in order to grill some food; I'd be there all night waiting for coals. In the past I've always used smaller pieces, generally branch wood, but this was a whole apple tree and I don't want to waste it in the wood boiler. So I was thinking - do I cut the wood into 'cookies', or do I cut it into narrow or thin strips (say 1" x 1") by whatever length? I don't want it to burn too fast though, I want good coals.
I cut some apple wood into cookies-- did not like it at all! What I really like is 6-8" length splits-- small small splits. Smaller than 2x2.
