Lilac tree on south side got leaves today.. north side still leaf not flower bud but we had frost and snow yesterday..
I should take some pics. They are (going to be) really bad here this year. They hatch out and mass right next to the egg smear. Don't know how long yet. I've seen a mass in one spot for 24 hours. When they get sprayed they try to escape by a thread but only get about a half a inch. Kinda like the hornet's last gasp. Kind of expensive way to try to kill some of them. We have egg smears from the ground all the way to the tippity top of the trees.I know this because I had tree tops come down this Winter and they were loaded on the undersides. I sprayed lots of BT last year to try to knock them out of some favorite lawn trees. I used to spray that just on blueberries, fruit trees and broccoli.
It has been real warm and sunny here the last two days, 70 deg., leaves are really starting to pop open. I went down into Mass. today and they are all leafed out down there. I can't be too far behind.
The white oaks still are just buds here on the south coast of Ma. Red oaks have tiny little leaves and the little flower catkin things. Grape vines still have no green in bud break yet. I've got dead and live caterpillars in all my apple buds and flowers ( I sprayed last week during a short rain respite ). Just winter moths and leafrollers so far I think although some could be gypsy but I had no egg smears on the trees anywhere I could find.
Snowed on and off all day today. Iron wood has leaves now maples are coming albeit shrivvely. Had a birch with catkins already. Screwy
Woke up to an inch on the ground. I heard more towards the central part (and north I would assume) areas had about 4"! What say you?
Dropped a willow a couple weeks ago, used the hydraulic to split it up today. That is some nasty useless stuff! 99lbs. kept suggesting to burn it in the fire pit and not split it.....
I guess it's not the end of the world if it has to be used for firewood. Just so much hardwood around here that it is readily frowned upon, as you know! There would always be a logger willing to log it off, no? I have never seen a large Ironwood...just a slow growing tree but great firewood.
This past weekend was rather cold. We had a good layer of frost. I looked at one of the shag hickory trees and noticed the leaves were not looking good after the frost. I have lived here for 36 years and never saw shag hickory leaves damaged by a spring freeze.
None of the spring flowers have done too well here so far...I think everything has received a little "freezer burn" this year
If the tree doesn't replace the ones that were damaged, I hope the leaves still on the tree that are good will be enough to keep it going this year. I will try to remember to post pics as things change. At least that tree is close to the house so don't have to go far to get pics.
Can't leave it at 199 posts, so have to say something, anything. Leaves are coming out now since we had a little rain (actually very little so far) but temp is cold. Supposed to hit 79* this weekend with 84* on Monday and sunny with no rain in sight. Good BBQin' weather coming up.
Wow! You will be much warmer than us. I'm waiting to see if we'll even have an 80 degree day before June this year.
