    I'd recommend starting with tomahawks.

I have some smaller throwing axes also. I'd like a double because it's more traditional and I thought about trying a completion at one of the woodsman festivals in the area. I only know of one in Cherry Springs State Park but would like to try it next year. Seems like it would be a cool weekend.

Nice setup. I have all wood handled tomahawks but would like an all metal.

Gransfors Bruks and Hults Bruks make high quality throwing axes.

    Thanks
Yeah, I like the wood handle ones better. These were kind of an impulse buy.
I was out at the wood pile one day and had this big round laying there and thought, that'd make a good target. So I figured out how to make a stand for and have been having a bit of fun with it.

The metal tomahawks are a good idea.....you'll never break the handle. That's also a good stand design. I usually keep several large cookie blocks I've cut from stumps for targets too.

Nice! I haven't thrown since I was a kid. I made a tomahawk out of a roofing hammer when I was about 10. It went with me everywhere for over 2 years. I got real good with it too; it was almost impossible to not have it hit right.
One day my buddies and I were camping near a lake. Being summer we stripped down to shorts and went for a swim after we had set up camp just to cool off. I stuck my tomahawk into a tree and we all went in for a dip. We came back about 10 minutes later and my hawk was gone. Nothing else in camp was touched. pizzed me off. I've always wanted to make another one.

Found a double bit at an auction yesterday, eight dollars. Works good, working on cleaning it up and oiling the handle.
