It never really gets below 55 down there with the house being heated. There used to be a wood stove in the basement, but it looks like it was sharing a chimney with the furnace (fuel oil) which I think is a no-no according to local fire codes. I have been entertaining thoughts of dumping the furnace and hooking the stove back up. But I may only be down there for one more winter: once the pole barn is done the shop and lumber storage are going in there.
Shawn Curry just an fyi.. buddy dI'd 30 by 40 shop 12 foot ceiling poured slab modular building from Lowe's with office above 8 foot ceilings for about 26k.. do not know your plans but worth looking into
wow that is cheap! Just my 12' x 20' workshop 4' deep foundation, floor & frame was $20k - siding, Sheetrock, roofing and deck on top, it all adds up! Just the Electrical subpanel with all GFCI tamper proof outlets, 220 vac air conditioner outlet, 50 amp Welder outlet was another 5k !!!
My dad just had a 30x40 with 12' walls built for around $25 - including insulation under the pad and spray foam on the walls. He says he can keep it above 50 with one fire per day. There's a few local builders and a couple who specialize. I think I'll be hiring out the work as long as I can supply the lumber and get a break on the price. If not I'll build it and do all the general contracting myself.
My used Harman Advance I picked up was heating the new shop just fine last year with NO insulation. In May we put in Roxul R23 in the walls covered on the inside with Reflectix R4 foil for a heat barrier for a total of R27. The ceiling has R46 Roxul using 2 layers of R23 and also covered on the inside with R4 foil for a total of R50. I also put in the OEM Harman Crossover air tube update kit to make it burn cleaner. Who has the Gummy Fix on their Harman? See pic - How do u like it? Hopefully I will use a little less pellets to heat the shop this year!!
Spent a little time in the workshop today. I bought a mobile base for the bandsaw...what a dream to move it around now!! If you've been waffling, go ahead and get one! Pics are from last month putting up some old signs, cabinets, shelves, and of course an image of the old church pew I refinished and re-assembled.
I have an old tube type TV with a built in DVD. Also, I have the stereo component system that I bought overseas back in the 70's. Really gets loud. Real loud. But I have the sense not to listen to it that loud now-a-days!
I don't always remember to have my picture taking thing with me and when I do I don't always use it and when I do the batteries aren't always good and when they are and I take pics I don't always remember to post them. That's all. Simple as that!
I have a bulldozer, so for me my ultimate shop (not built yet) will have a pit so I can access the inside of the tracks. There is just a lot of work that has to be done in there and with a dozer they are too low slung to really get in there and work.
