From another thread it came up that we should have a conversation on what the ultimate garage/workshop setup would look like. I'm sure we all have some great, creative, useful (and in the case of Scotty Overkill- over-and-above) ideas! Please share your insights with the group!

I'll start by saying that a couple of pieces of pegboard on the wall is your friend for small, often used hand tools. I also would suggest a couple or several outlet strips, preferably wall mounted, since you never can have too many electrical outlets available to you in the garage. My last suggestion is 2 items: a wall mounted heater/radiant heater for the winter, and a fan for the summer.

Okay gang, let's hear the suggestions!

    Hello
This will be an interesting thread!
I agree with your comments about a good heater and fan. Maybe an air conditioner too!
    Some basics would be:
A good workbench maybe with draws and a wood vise on the end and iron or metal hobby vise on top.
A drafting chair or just a round bar type stool.
I am looking for a good work table with storage underneath. Right now my work table is plywood on two saw horses with a painters tarp on top but it works! I also have a nice kitchen cutting board to make a mess on!!!
Also one tip I got was to put a power strip on the ceiling above the workbench so the power tool cord is not in the way of your work piece. It may work well in some cases. A good air compressor is always useful.
I am also wishing for a good welder and blasting cabinet.
I also have an idea of building a bar counter using two standard 24" wide and 36" high base cabinets with a counter top and 2x6 framing in front to give the standard 42" bar height! This can be used for the computer, phone, printer...etc.
That reminds me, it is not complete without a beer fridge?
I have also seen a sink and urinal if the plumbing is in there!!!
Perimeter rope light may look good too and my favorite treat would be a shelf above the doors and window all around the shop with a model train running around on it! :)
Almost forgot! How about a radio or big flat screen TV for training vids on YouTube???

One last item - a good service cart. :)
Making a shop service cart more serviceable!

Rule # 1. The garage must be at least 2x the square foot of the house!!!

An attic truss with a good load rating for a man cave is good too.
A drive through would be great for pulling the camper in and out also.

I would love to have a lift. And a mill. And a big lathe. And a CNC plasma cutter. Just the basics.

Some covered above...but a dedicated area for welding/torching/fabricating. Separate area with a bridgeport and a lathe. Separate area to showcase and work on saws. Low pro car lift. Big toolbox. 80 gallon air compressor with multiple line drops. Ventilation system with heating and cooling. Mini fridge. Bathroom. Fireball dispenser.

Those are the first things that pop into my mind.

Yeah, I can't believe that this topic gets posted on FHC and it takes 8 posts for the words "wood stove" to be listed! :hair: ;)

this is so true.. a garage for cars and a workshop! cause cars take up space to just sit!

so ideal would be 4 bay one for mechanics .. one for woodwork one for saws and chains one for everything that would not fit other 3... I got 3.5 with bonus room above too small! wife insists on putting her car in ito_O

I built a workshop addition next to the garage with a 36" wide metal fire door connecting them. Workshop has a 36" front door only! So workshop is designed to be a workshop and will always be a workshop. :)
It also can be an office too!

Very fortunate to have bought a house with a post and beam barn. Has two garage doors (one north side, one south) so you can bring in big stuff from either side. Plus a 36" door for entrance/exit. The east side has an overhand over a cement slab that currently is my backlog to split but will be a wild game processing station with sink as soon as I finish splitting.

I have my inherited wood shop tools on the east wall (drill press, table saw, radial arm saw, band saw) and work bench w/ storage and overhead lighting.

South west corner is mechanics area - floor jack, jack stands, all my stuff do to oil changes, extra fluids, etc.

West wall is another workbench, tool chest, air compressor and shelving racks

Northwest corner is bicycles and dirt bikes.

In the middle (constantly shuffles around) is the motorcycle, riding mower w dump cart and wood splitter.

    Upstairs is additional storage.

    Hello
I was just thinking of a new Theme song or saying for our workshop?

See Billy Joel and his video behind me called "We didn't start the fire! The fire's been burning since the world's been turning!" .

    Our song is:
"We can start your fire! Our tools are turning to get you burning!" LOL
    Harman, Enviro, Travis Pioneer Bay!
Breckwell, Sherwood Indistries, Quadrafire Classic Bay!
    Convection Blower, Exhaust Blower!
    Auger Bearing, Auger Motor!
    Igniter, Burn pot
    Ash pan, Weld spot!
"We can start your fire! Our tools are turning to get you burning!"

Maybe a new video that shows Stove Cleaning with girls dancing and fires burning? Blondie or Pat Benatar or Britney Spears singing? LOL

Does anyone else have a workshop Theme song?

I can't believe I'm actually downsizing my garage. Already dreaming of a separate workshop!

I'm drawing plans for a new house (with Woodstock of course) and a 2-1/2 car garage. On bay for the car, one for a tractor and 1/2 for the inevitable junk, LOL

Take a drive through the U.P.

Typically, the garages are always larger than the house!! (Yup, guilty!)

If I were to do it all over (or if I were a bachelor) I'd build a large steel building with radiant floor heat, lift, machine and wood shop areas, gun room and a small apartment loft built in. All I'd really need in it would be a bedroom, bathroom, and open kitchen/living area. The majority of my time would be spent in the shop or in the woods anyway, just need a place to eat, crap, shower, sleep and occasionally watch TV or a movie.

I am going to be living out of my truck for the next couple of months, sold my home and can't seem to be in the right place at the right time with anything else. I refuse to pay $1000 + a month for housing in the interm. At this point due to the cold molasses of the reality world ( I don't need the banks for anything its just all the other paper work) might not have a new place until fall. Minimum is going to be 30 days out. PIA
