Man, I literally just went to do the rebate on my new rifle and there is a recall on it. I'll post pics of the rifle tonight. Edit: The rifle had to be made before 9-16.
Its a taurus..... Not a surprise at all. Look down the bore. i bet theres rust there too. I work part time at a gun shop and i'm unfamiliar with any happy taurus owners.
No, the fact that they're on Gen 5 after the initial product was "perfection" is irony incarnate to me.
So you think a higher quality gun would not have rusted? They barrel is not rusting yet. I know a guy that has a 709 and loves it. The next time I see him I am going to as him how his trigger is. He did tell me he had some problems with it on the first few shots. Then he said remembered some old guy at a gun shop told him to break a gun in with PMC ammo and he got a box and shot it and it has been fine but I don't see what that would have to do with any thing. Are the Taurus revolvers junk too?
Taurus owner here, early 90's thought they were cheapies, but they have come up in quality and I enjoy all of my Taurus revolvers.
Any gun will rust if exposed to the right conditions, have you ever owned a Taurus? Mines not rusted and have always worked. I have seen high dollar guns rust. the manufacture has NOTHING to do with it.
So...you working "part time" at a lgs would say that to a customer?....and suggest what other pistol instead?
My daily carry for the last 15 years is a gen 2 glock 19 that spends 99% of its time in a leather IWB holster. It almost never gets cleaned and has zero rust on it.
Funny you say that, my Glocks are the only guns besides the stainless that don't rust. By far the most scratch resistant, besides cerekote. Most police trade ins are mint too. The plastic handles seem to Mar or blemish first.
When I bought this Taurus 709 I asked 2 gun shops if it was worth it to get one with a stainless slide ($10 more) and they both laughed. Stainless will still rust. I bet a cheaper gun is made from a low grade stainless.
I think you're fine. It looks like a little bit of surface rust on the magazine release, and the pin below the safety. Burnish them a bit and you're good to go. I honestly don't see a functional issue at all, just a bit of a cosmetic one. The guts might tell a different story, but I highly doubt that. I'd just remove the slide, de-grease it with brake cleaner, then cold blue the light areas. Save the paint for later. It looks fine. You're doing fine also.
The mag release is recessed where the rust is and the pin below the safety is also rusted. I'm going to roll with it like that for now, if it gets worse I may look into refinishing it. I want to get a satisfactory trigger pull. I've been debating on buying a trigger pull gauge to get a before and after.
For the cost, stainless would have been the way to go. For future reference, if you can upgrade to stainless for $10.00, do it. I don't care if it's 304, 308, 316, etc. grade, it's more resistant to rust than Cro-Mo slide steel.
I'm going to be honest with you here....and remember, I have a 709 also, with a bunch of rounds through it. For an EDC, the 709 isn't my choice. It has too many issues, some minor, some more so. I'd look at the Glock 43. You may have to save up a bit (like me), but it's a great option. Or, the Ruger LC9s. That little sucker has been nothing but reliable.
I've been thinking about getting something else to carry. I've been thinking about another Sig P320. Today I got an email for a Springfield XDS with a stainless slide in .45 for $334 after a rebate. I would have gone for it if it was a 9mm. Then I have also been thinking about carrying my FN 9C.
