Yea 6" is generally standard by depends how much draft u need.. depends on side of stove and height of prefab or chimney.. block chimney better than prefab but they are ok.. just pay attention to code. Or have a lic contractor do for insurance requirements.. safety.. nice move tho, gas is fur people who don't care

Probly need to put in a prefab. Should go 2 or 3 feet above highest point of roof to stay in code. Otherwise cant sell the house..and ins might not cover if heaven forbid something happens..

you may well be right stuckinthemuck .. IME being allergic to mold, the places that routinely get mold are kitchens, bathroom and basements and then leaks (window door etc) kitchens and bath are usually caused by leaks or condensation on pipes.. foam on copper pipes limits that greatly..
Why I like spray foam insulation is it a vapor barrier..

Got the wiring for the two lights in the ceiling of the alcove + the outlet for the fan kit done today, as well at the rest of the Roxul put in...in the ceiling, I put in two layers of R-15, and then just 1 layer in the walls.

Tomorrow: Durock, and patch the imperfections in the hearth pad. Sunday will be sanding and staining the hearth pad in preparation for the Mason to come in and do the stone work next week.

While the stone's getting put in, I'll turn my attention to the siding. So close to being done!!

Lo0ks great! Never worked w/cement board.
Screwed? Do you have to predrill holes for the screws?

Screwed...they're special screws made for cement board. Score and snap just like drywall.

Well sort of. It is a lot harder on the utility knife scoring the cement.

Get the DeWalt Carbide utility knife blades...those things last forever, even under cement board abuse!

Well...ended up just being able to run some errands this morning before a family engagement that I couldn't really blow off. I might take Tuesday off from work to get where I want to be before the stone guy gets here on Thursday...I really want to get the slab stained and the drywall hung/taped/painted before the rock so I don't have to try to cut in around the stone after the fact.

Wow, my apologies for neglecting this thread, but here's an update...between changing our minds on type of stone and scheduling woes, the stone guys were finally able to get out today...I'm stoked on how it's coming out:

Are you going to use flagstone for the hearth or are yo going with a tile that matches the rock? It is looking great so far.

Thanks! I'm sanding and staining the concrete slab I poured...it's a concrete countertop mix that also works really well for this application.

Almost there! Tomorrow they'll finish the corner wrap and fill in the bigger gaps with mortar. [IMG]
