Keep your razor blade at a very low angle...you won't scratch the glass...I have cleaned hundreds of windows this way, no problems

Also, this isn't glass. It's ceramic. A little lube won't hurt.

I saw on YouTube a company doing tests on their ceramic glass they heated it up to something like 1500 degrees, I probably am off on the temperature but, they threw it in ice water, and it didn't break

OK, this piqued my interest so I went and did a bit of reading. So the glass in my stove is actually ceramic glass. Now, the reason you could heat up the ceramic glass and then subject it to ice water is because it has a very low coefficient of thermal expansion, maybe close to zero (Borosilicate glass has a coefficient of thermal expansion ~3 × 10−6 K−1 at 20 °C) and thus the stress shock is not there. Now this helps my theory that the problem with my glass becoming loose is that the cast iron door expanded enough to pull the retaining tabs away from the edge of the glass; and yes, I did give this theory to ESW. Since the ceramic glass probably has a very low coefficient of thermal expansion, it is not going to increase much in size; thus, the opening gets too large for the glass.

Interesting...I'll try the lube trick. Anyone know what temps Astroglide is rated for? ;-)

I'm kind of mystified by this thread.
From my first little plate steel ship stove that I had in Alaska,
I have cleaned the glass w/a razor blade...and headed on down the road.
The free standing Lopi we had at the last house was cleaned hundreds of
times w/a razor blade. I never noticed it got scratched.
I always just cleaned it when I made a fire or when it needed it.
Just thought is was part of the stove ritual.
Hot or cold, really didn't make a difference.
Can't take more than 30sec to do.
    Puzzling.

I get what you saying about the scratching but I have never had anything on my Lopi that I couldn't clean off with ashes n water slurry, but then again I burn dry wood

My Progress Hybrid doesn't really get too bad. The glass gets more Ash build up than anything. It gets cleaned once in a while but I can always see through it.
My stove needs loaded more often than a BK too. That is probably a factor.

That turned out very nice indeed. A lot of work and money but the end result is really great.

Update on this guy...we had to put him down on Saturday, Veterans Day. He gave us a great 13 years, and was an absolutely fantastic beast. See ya, old pal!

Wives seem to know this tidbit. Although if we’re dealing with frictions beyond our control, they should know that the deviation of temperatures are less at that and may possibly be overloaded.:emb:

Thanks guys...it feels really weird around here without him. He was always in the middle of everything, and really was a member of the family. He is definitely missed.
