After having a pellet stove and using 24/7 for past 4 years,
I wish we thought about getting one years ago..
Constant heat via the distibution blower is my main reason for loving it..
no hot now/chilly now with baseboard heat. 2 to 2/1/4 bags day when single digits...

Depends on the neighborhood and how many volunteer "do-gooders" driving around from other areas. We had a new neighbor move into my mountain home road that reported us. Twice. (start up and the smell of burning coal overnight). Except we were out of the city limits and were not included in the ban. It's flipping crazy there, people smoke pot but tobacco cigarettes are scorned.

Ya, go spend 4 hours on I-25 in rush hour traffic and then measure the air quality, give me a break. Yes there are inversions, but. :picard:

I'm glad I live in Maine. If you don't burn wood here, you might be in the minority.

Why a pellet stove? Propane costs are insane - I spend in two months of propane use what I spend entire year for pellets. As a former wood burner, I love my pellet stoves for all the reasons mentioned previously (no bugs, less mess, storage, and especially constant heat without having to feed it every couple of hours).

How many bags to a ton? 40 - unless you find them in 20# bags then it would be 80. Let's not even get started about whether you are truly talking "ton" or "pallet" (some pallets are 1.2 tons . . . )

I know this is relative....roughly, in a cold climate, NE, how many tons will you burn in a winter? I burn 5-7 tons in my small house. But that is with two stoves and one heats up my foundation downstairs plus some leaks into the underhouse garage. Also, 2x4 construction so not much room for insulation - and no house wrap under the siding. Plus other issues. A well insulated and "tight" house would probably take half what I burn.

Is pellet heat cheaper than gas or propane? In my area - my propane is about $3/gal so pellets are cheaper by about 1/2. Couple of years ago propane was $5.50/gal and that is why I put in pellet stoves. Here is a link to a calculator to figure out your cost per BTU once you input your local prices.

On a cold day, how many times do you fill the "hopper". It depends on the stove you get, along with outside temperature and wind, as to how many times a pellet stove needs fed. The larger the hopper, the longer between fill-ups - and some stove accept a hopper extension (such as my Harman's). My former Hastings, on really cold, windy days, a hopper full would last 12-14 hours so I would fill morning and night. With my Harman's, I just top off once per day.

Do you have a generator so you can have heat w/no power? No, but I live in town, and have never lost power for more than a couple hours. Also have a propane cook stove which in a pinch would keep the place from freezing in a pinch. At my other place, in the boonies, we had a wood stove so didn't have to worry about heat when the power was out.

Can a pellet stove be fed manually?

where do you get electricity for 11ยข/kWh ?
    I'm paying $0.258765 from Eversource. ($0.10759 for generation and $0.15117 for delivery) Residential rate 32 , non-heat.

You might find your electric use is actually a tiny bit less if you have fewer cold starts/week or month on a typical Winter day. With a refrigerator with numerous on/off cycles we usually don't meter the first 24 hours and then average 24 hour periods after that. I like a 72 hour sample.

There are several stoves that gravity feed and heat by none forced air flow just make certain that any such stove passes modern burning tests. Some of the first ones were prone to hopper fires more than the electrical fed units were. All feed systems can fail it is what the stove does when they fail that matters. Pellet stoves are not set and forget devices no matter what the sales droid says.

    Still burning nut shells here.

At a penny and a half a pound for the stuff it is a win win win scenario.

I WOULD LOVE to test a Wiseway stove on the shells and see how it works.

    Might be too hot???
