I know nothing about pellet burning.
    Just curious:
    Why a pellet stove?
How many bags to a ton?
I know this is relative....roughly, in a cold climate, NE,
how many tons will you burn in a winter?
Is pellet heat cheaper than gas or propane?
On a cold day, how many times do you fill the "hopper".
Do you have a generator so you can have heat w/no power?
Can a pellet stove be fed manually?

Here is my best shot....answers will vary

Why a pellet stove? Cheaper than propane.
How many bags to a ton? 50
I know this is relative....roughly, in a cold climate, NE,
how many tons will you burn in a winter? Almost 6 (average is around 3-4)
Is pellet heat cheaper than gas or propane? Gas generally no, propane some places yes some no
On a cold day, how many times do you fill the "hopper". Once in AM once in PM.
Do you have a generator so you can have heat w/no power? Yes, and its on a UPS to keep it running for an hour or so until genny is ready.
Can a pellet stove be fed manually. In theory yes i suppose, but not practical.

justdraftn i do not have pellet stove.. but I did research them.. why I went to a Woodstove was It said on a ton of pellets that it had roughly the same BTU as 100 gallon of heating oil... so figure out what a 100 galons oh HHO cost in your area to figure savings...

as I get older I will consider them as more attractive option.... because I still like wood heat but cutting stacking and splitting is tough...

From what I hear natural gas is the cheapest then oil , propane and electric . Unfortunately I have electric so I use a pellet stove in my basement which heats the whole house . In my case I enjoy heating with wood and a pellet stove is the modern way of doing it .:campfire:

    Thanks! ....and Thanks!!
    So here is more:
Once again, I know this is relative.....cold day,
how often does the auger need power to feed the burner?
If you are running on generator, no grid power, does the generator
have to run all the time,.....or once an hour, for a few hours at time??

Yes, I live "in the zone". My Lopi is EPA cert. Most days they(air police) would never know it was burning.
I am natural gas. Wood is about half my heat. That will change now that I am semi retired.
Will be home more to keep the stove going. I have figured stove saves me about $100/mth
in the coldest months. ......plus, I just love playing in the fire.

You would need the generator to run constantly. Augers usually run sone variation of on for a few seconds off for a few seconds. Also, the blowers (exhaust and convection) run too. They do use very little power. Maybe 200 watts after ignition.

There is a model that does not require power like WW said. I cannot comment to the effectiveness of those units.

I think this is what you might be referring to . The only thing is it has to be vented straight up and only radiant or convection heat .

Keep that woodstove for back up like I did. Pellets handle the brunt, But if the power goes out or it gets too dang cold. I fire up the wood eater.

The nice thing about a pellet stove is you can put them about anywhere(following what the manual allows). I moved to pellet from wood due to an infant and more steady heat. Best move we've made. And can still burn a bit of wood. :)
