Not sure when they were made. One is in the old Rabbit Hash General Store, now being restored after a fire, and the other is in the old Rabbit Hash Iron Works Building. The second stove is smaller than the first one that's in the store. Rabbit Hash, Kentucky and yes, it's a real place. It's as much an a state of mind as it is a destination.
Good evening. My father Louie Scott designed and built the Rabbit Hash Iron Works stoves when I was about 10 years old. He is 78 now. He still heats with two of them. I would sometimes grind the welds on them to give them the seamless look and I have assembled many of them. To this day I believe them to be one of the best wood burners ever made. damm how many cords of wood have I stuffed in those things!!! I personally don't own one of them and stumbled upon this site while searching for one. I still have the original drawings for all the parts. I considered making a few for novelty since being in the sheet metal industry for thirty years. If anyone has any questions I would be happy to answer them. Seems like a bunch of good folk on this site. Brandon
Welcome to the FHC Brandon Scott Quite a cool backstory and history on those stoves. Sometimes I'm amazed at how people find their way here.
I guess I need to list toys... Caterpillar 953 Caterpillar 236 skid steer Husqvarna 395 Husqvarna 365 Honda Big Red 40 ton Honda powered log splitter (fabricated and built by myself) I thought the ash borers had killed all my trees....turns out it's just the bark falling off when I start a piece of equipment...scared I guess...
Welcome Brandon Scott! Glad you found your way here. That's cool your dad built those stoves and that's what brought you here. Funny how we form connections in life. This is the best forum on the web. You're gonna like it here. Say hello to the rest of the gang here... Introduce yourself here !
Hello Brandon! Welcome to our circus. That is awesome that your family has such a rich history in the stove business and helping folks get some energy independence. Would love to hear about how your Father made the decision to go forward with his idea and make it a reality. It's history that many of us here love and it's an important part of American Spirit to me. Once again, Welcome.
Funny this is in "non EPA wood stove" thread...they are the reason he quit making them. Then the liability insurance got to the point where it cost as much as each unit. No win situation. They were truly air tight when you shut the knobs. His last experiment was to put a door on each end of the larger model. It was the best one made. Air entered from each end and didn't leave a pile of coals in the back. He only made 2 and uses one to this day. I can put up pics once I figure out all the bells and whistles to the site... At one time I had the idea to market them as a flower pot but "people have been known to burn wood inside..."
Thanks shack! I was just accepted last night. I am learning my way around. Forgot to mention the experimental "aluminum" model he made. The hottest radiant heat you have ever felt!!! Osage sank the top in and he cut it up before he burned something down. Not before it burned up the backs of several coats where people got too close that winter!
You folks out der gotts ta member, Rabbit Hash is as much a state of mind as it is a destination! And Louie Scott is responsible for a lot of great inventions beyond the Rabbit Hash stove.
Funny story about the Osage orange that melted the aluminum stove. My friend Tommy Feldhaus was a few years older than me and got the rights to cut wood on the Bunger farm on Gunpowder Creek early in the 80's. He supplied my dad firewood. That Osage tree put off 13 "real" cords of wood! Yes a single tree. And he never cut the trunk! There wasn't a saw in the community big enough to tackle it!!! I believe a flood finally took the trunk away.
Now I have to know who Ralphie boy is!!! Yes he is a wise man. Probably 20 patents to his name. I only have 1. I was switched at the hospital.
Would've made a very dense canoe...we were just talking about this last week...I believe the trunk was 6 ft in diameter....yeah I know...somebody is gonna throw the BS flag on me...
Well.. I didn't wanna be the first to mention it, but the rule is.. "No pics, it didn't happen." Can probably let it slide this time, you didn't know of FHC then. By the way, there's threads for pics of chainsaws, tractors, pets.. Well, you get the idea.
Well Chaz.... I have a 2 acre lake stocked with the usual suspects and even some walleye and yellow perch. I caught a bass last week so big the picture weighed 4 lbs...
Fish Stories...that would go in the "hobbies and interests" section Welcome to FHC...just FYI, watch out for that Eric VW character...
