I think I have an opportunity to get a Makita 6421 from Home Depot rentals for $276.00 I have a Husky 455 Rancher Everything I've read on this forum says get this saw if you can! My Husky runs just fine should I go for it? I know the Makita is 64cc Drove there today to get it and they rented it out! This gives me time for second thoughts. I've been calling this store for 2weeks and each time a different person and different story. Sold, don't have any for sale, sold yesterday, etc. Today tried again and they had it, said the price and would hold it for me. If I don't get it I'm OK with the 455. But... I'm waiting for a call now for when it comes off rental What do you all think?
It's a great saw. I got one of retail from HD, and that price is amazing. They don't go for that low around here. Most places list then fire $322, and will sell them for 300 at lowest. Trust me, I spent some time trying to locate any dolkita 6421 rental that was for sale. That said, I have an 029 super, which is a great saw, and that 029s runs past any husky rancher I've ever seen. I've run my buddy's stock 460 Magnum 80 cc Stihl as well. The dolkita 6421, even stock is not getting thoroughly spanked by the 460. Yes, the 460 beats the 6421, but not as bad as you'd think. As I'm sure you're aware, you can make that dolkita 73cc, 80cc, or 84 CC's for minimal cost. You should be able to talk him down maybe $20. So, run, don't walk to get that 6421 Makita. I love my 6421.
That's actually a 6401 in the pic, but HD corporate hasn't understood that The 6401 was non cat muffler, the 6421 is a cat muffler and has the black top plastic. So that's not the real picture of the actual saw you would be buying.
MasterMech , Horkn , tamarack When I called them, HD, I heard it run in the background. Sounded good if it was that saw Told them I was leaving and would be there in 40 min. Long drive. By the time I got there, they said they tried to call me to tell me someone rented it out by mistake Gave them my cell and home #s they said they'd call. I wrote their names down and will call tonight and tomorrow morning after the rental morning rush Horkn I have no idea how to do the things you mentioned but am willing to try! Also it says online that the pics of saw may be different.
update just called and was told they pulled the one for sale off the shelf and rented it by mistake. I guess they all look alike! Rental agreement says it'll be back in morning at 9:00 if it's on time. I'll call 9:30 or so. And see if they have it and if they need time to get it ready for sale Saga continues I've been chasing this saw for two weeks. Different answers every time. There was another one a little further away for under $100.00 didn't call about it might be a broken saw? Too good to be true? No idea where the store is... but there are maps!
Umm buy both. Even if it's been run over the 69 dollar one is worth that much at least in parts. Around here, they go for $322 , as the one I bought was listed at. I got it for $300, and I had to pull ALL of my tricks to get it for that. I'm a Buyer as my profession.
That is a good price but I am not sure the 10 cc difference is one you would notice. When I went from 50cc to 60cc I also went fast forward 20 years so the difference was substantial but the 455 is a modern saw, not a 20 year old one like my 026.
The 455 isn't going to keep up with the 6421. Especially if he's up for gutting the muffler. Not even close then.
He absolutely would be able to tell the power difference going from a 55 rancher to a 6421 dolkita. My 029s is 57cc and the 6421 is a definite step up in power over it. A 455 rancher is 3.5 HP. The Makita 6421 is 4.7 HP. Even with a stock cat muffler, that 6421 goes very nicely.
A lot of the "farm" saws like the 455 are actually de-tuned to boost their durability. A professional option like your 026 is pretty much tuned to maximize performance for a given displacement. Of course, their are improvements to be made upon that even but either there are significant durability risks (from a warranty standpoint) or the necessary work isn't viable from a mass production standpoint. (Hand porting, polishing, shaping, edge beveling, etc.)
I just edited and added the HP levels in my last post. 1.2 HP is a big difference. The 026 is coincidentally the same 3.5 hp as the 455. The 029 super is 3.8 hp, and the .9 HP the 6421 makes is noticable.
Horkn thanks I'm still trying to get it called at 10:00 still not back from rental The hp difference is what has me interested just never had a Makita saw just power tools
Hey Mike- you know it's a Dolmar with blue skin, yeah? Great saws overall. Barcroftb is their unofficial spokesman
