Was 17° at home & 15° when I got to the cutting area. Sun hitting the mts. . No wind, quiet & cold. Saw some grouse on the road in. First tree of the day got hung up, by the time I got it down. I was overdressed, overheated & the sun was warming things up . Spent time making a few more trails to get to some good birch. Lots of down trees, some of it is spruce, & pretty good shape, dry too. Those needing wood to burn now could score in this area Ended up with 1/2+ load , a good day. Load of birch coming up the road to the truck. Road & puddles frozen hard, Headed home. Forest service road to the cutting area. No passing
Oh yea Got a flat tire on the way out on the trailer. Glad I only had 1/2 a load & a new spare Found it before I got to the highway, held air when I got home , sprayed some 409, bubbles out the tread side. Looks like a slow leak, picked up a nail or something on the road. Might be salvageable. Marked it with a screw On the maintenance list for the wood hauler equip.
Nice looking day at the cutting area. I can see why this is your last day, with temps like that it can't be easy. Bummer on the flat tire, good thing you had a spare.
Looking good Dave. I wouldn't get much cutting done with those views. Are you pretty close to bringing home what you would have liked to? With temps like that, it's just a matter of time until the snows-a-flyin.
Always awesome pics Dave. I'm with WS... I'd never get anything done out there... I'd wanna just sit and take in that view...
Geez thats cold Looks like a good day cutting wood though. Sorry about the flat, trailer problems are no fun when they're full of wood
SSSSSHHHH! Don't use "S" word LOL Yea, Should have enough to fill the row of pallets. Had some left from last year, 6 cord added to it should be plenty. But, I can always go back in in theSpring (before the bugs & leaves) if I need more. Splitting time
+1 on the rubber plugs. Had a flat a while ago, and I didn't have a spare. Called up a buddy to pick me up so I could get a new tire. He had some of these in his truck, and a gas powered air compressor. 10 minutes later I was driving down the road again. Drove around on it like that for a couple weeks too, before I got around to getting some new tires.
Actually once you get yourself moving & the sun comes up it's a good working temp, mid 20°s pretty quick. Was warmer this AM, 21° Funny thing about the spare, when I bought it the tire guy wanted to put it on & take the worst tire off the trailer for the spare. I said no, I want the spare to be the best/newest tire I have, when needed, it has to work . May add the floor jack to the wood cutting stuff, in the back of the PU. 1/2 load was tough enough to get it jacked up, a full load would have been a bear. A guy stopped with a hydraulic bottle jack, made it a lot easier. The bottle screw jack from the Toy, was barely lifting the trailer. Was going to have to cut a round to block it up & cut a round for the base of the jack. ( waste firewood. ) Alaskan's seem to always stop & offer help, good folks here.
I have a plug kit in the PU, & a 12v, tire air pump. I figured with that weight, I pinched a side wall on a rock on the forest service road & the tie was toast. But when I got home, the bead sealed & it held air, found one leak right away, will check it over better before I head out with the trailer , maybe a plug & a patch will give me a few more years of use. (I have a good spare ) Glad I made a mount & it goes with the trailer. This AM pic
Ah heck Dave I was just starting to enjoy your excursions to the wood lot.......better go wood snob at least one more load of nice birch, can never have enough.
Just a slow leak, probably could've aired it up & got home. I did a walk around & didn't notice the low tire. Still bubbles this AM. had 60 PSI, now 40. Screw is just marking the hole . Rim looks good, glad I found it before hitting the highway. Thinking a plug will work & Save some $$
Weather may hold & I might get back in there. Got a few cord to split & stack before I get more. +1 FHC "Moto" "Can never have enough wood" ! When someone asks me how much wood I have, I say "Not enough " LOL
I'm going next Saturday to look over 130 acres that was just logged. This just might be fun....what I understand is the owner had them put extra wide roads in. "CAN NEVER HAVE ENOUGH"
I dunno, we have a few hundred cords of cottonwood.... [ "Can never have enough wood" ! When someone asks me how much wood I have, I say "Not enough " LOL [/QUOTE]
