Ha! Yeah I need to get the MAU going but I've deprioritized it until I don't have any windows open in the house anymore, so probably in the next few weeks. Debating the location, considering between the hood and the stove in the kitchen. I have a TON more updates to post. Lighting, paint, moved the doors in the hallway, started finishing around the back door. Soon! Garry
Ok an update. This was about 3 weeks ago. Handles arrived and I installed them. We had a local blacksmith make them for us, they're "Black Oxide", not painted and were cheaper than a lot of mass produced Chinese Lowe's handles. I back drilled every hole and countersunk, etc. so it's a nice, flush mount on the inside, bolted right through to be super skookum.
Next move was to start fixing the hallway. It was a disaster and my wife hated it. So did I. So first I had to fix a rat's nest of power and then get rocking!!
Then I started framing in around the back door. This wall will go into the shower and the window on top will be glass block to let some natural light in there and stick with the theme. Then I ran out of materials. And money So I took a.... CAMPING BREAK! Took my son, he loved it!!!
Once I got back, some 6X6's that I'd ordered were delivered, more materials YAY!!!! The plan with the 6X6's was to lap them into the beams overhead to give me some proper location to hang lights from. Some might call it a "hack", I call it "creative" and also "Darn, I really don't want to fish wire in the cathedral ceiling". So I notched them up, and got the first one in, which will suspend an Edison bulb fixture over the table. And yeah, I had a mockup in place for a few days which we moved around a few times as we didn't want to make a shadow under the skylight, hence it's offset in a somewhat weird way, but it was the best compromise we could manage. And more mud and door roughed in. I hate mudding.
So the first beam went in so well, that I hammered out the 2nd two! These ones go over the "breakfast bar" and were slated for vintage, reclaimed schoolhouse lights that I bought at a yard sale. Also had to work under "supervision" while building the lap joints in the garage. And I got in trouble because I got sawdust all over Jessica's car. I really liked the wainy part on the one timber, so I pointed it front and center. Chains on the lights are a little long but wanted the ability to manuever them. When things are settled down, I'll cut them down.
The next weekend I focused all my energy back into the hallway because it was an atrocity. Mudding and sanding done. Paint done. And then I did a boss trim job. That corner was awful and every piece was customized in a few dimensions. The actual corner piece I had to shape on the table saw to get the right dimension and notch the whole back out. Fun times. Pics don't really show it. Color is gray, like a slate gray.
Gary love the door and drawer pulls might need name of your blacksmith in future g0od on ya for taking youngster camping too your priorities are perfect!
Noah at Helderberg Blacksmith Home, happy to recommend and hope ya'll hire him. GREAT GUY, and reasonable cost! I don't care what you say - handcrafted trumps Chinesium stamped crap any day.
This is tagged because they look great and our house is post and beam so we are trying to get a wrought iron accent on a budget.. so I need to save some money and discuss how big of a kitchen we need and where to put it!
I really need to finish updating this thread, have about another year's worth of updates to pile in. Funny, still about 15 things on the punch list, keep chipping away at it.
Thanks for bumping this thread Garry Polmateer WOW!! Quite the impressive bit of work you and the hired gun's did. Truly impressive design and follow through. Well, it seems that you are doing that, one piece at a time. Look forward to future updates.
I'm still working on the kitchen if you can believe it! Just finished tiling the countertop. Built a new table... sigh. Life's been busy.
That is one project that is said to add the most value to a home. Looks good. Nice section of color and textures.
