I built a fire in the furnace several weeks ago or maybe a moth when it was cool and damp. Just fire it up for a short burn then let it go out. Started one again here on Tuesday, same reason cool and damp. Did it the same way lay down a big chunk then a small bit of kindling get it going close damper and draft tight let it burn as long as it will and go out. takes the dampness and chill out of the house. A log home won't have a thermal value much less than a 2x4 frame log. See https://www.uaf.edu/files/ces/publications-db/catalog/eeh/EEM-00852.pdf
I cant confirm the reputations of being cold. I know them as the opposite. All I can add is any poorly constructed home will be a nightmare to heat or cool. Prior to Alaska I was stationed in Presque Isle, Maine. my house was right at 2,000 square feet. I can tell you that that house was way hard to keep @ 73 than my home here. The house in Maine was conventional construction. My home here is larger, but it is easer to heat. I believe the floor plan is the reason, the 2 story colonial in Maine vs a open concept 2 story log. I burn a twice the amount of wood here than I did there. Maple there vs spruce here, I would imagine that the BTUs would wind up being more close than the volume would suggest.
high today still 77 so no fire yet.. Thursday might be a winner with high of 57 low of 42 no sun and rain! trying to convince girls to shut windows but it's stuffy at this point think in I could make it to November that's not happened before had several frosts but I think I'm winning battle of upgrades as with sun we haven't got below 69 inside yet
I think ours is going to be lit off soon.....wife's not home so I ain't waiting on her, 99, or the tooth fairy.
Still holding off here. 60s lately. Really nice out. Start moving wood under the covered porch tomorrow. I'll be using the flatbed on the truck.
First fire started this afternoon here in western Kentucky. Not really that cold but cold enough. Looking forward to the upcoming burning season. Gives me purpose in my retirement years during the winter months. As a side note 4 to 5 years ahead too
Filed the wood rack in the great room tonight. Getting closer. Definetly the latest first fire. There's been a few nights I could have lit up but working long hours lately nixes those ideas .
I fired up a store bought log last evening to take the edge off a damp cool day. I'm starting a real fire tonight, getting into the 30's by morning.
Just about ready to get my seat in the stove room and read my devotions......fire in the stove, I'm pretty sure my mansion in heaven is going to have a wood stove. Bible says he will give you the desires of your heart.
Still in the low 70's during the day, but nighttime Temps have been dipping into the upper 40's. Friday the bottom is supposed to fall out of it with frost/freeze predicted. So I my have to fire the Hardy Thursday. Usually make it till November.
