IMG_2666.JPG Made this today. 1x6 pine. Got the clearance higher above the stove. Won't need the heat shield now.

Looks good! My wife was taking about "us" doing that to our mantle this morning. Need to check my clearances though.

I actually wanted a mantel above my stove but I don't guess that is a good idea; unless it is made from a noncombustible material. I wanted a place to hang my stockings in hopes that Father Christmas would leave me some goodies.

Check your stove's clearance requirement. You could always put a heat shield on the mantel right above the stove.

I won't be hanging stockings above the stove but I am planning on making a few smaller floating shelves that'll go on the wall next to the brick. I'll hang the stockings there.

Father Christmas would need to go on a serious diet if he has any plans on making it down my 6" flue alive! :hair::picard:;)

You have a point there; then there is the whole problem of crawling through the stove.

With the height of the stove I have and where the pipe enters the wall, I am not sure I could add a mantel and have it look proportional. I want to do a faux chimney on the wall behind the stove as I think that would look nice.

Hi -We bought a 49” flat screen and the store salesman said to put it above the fireplace
We did not have a fireplace so we had to block up the window and put one in! When we got the surround receiver, I asked where the center channel speaker should go? The salesman said on the Mantel, so we put in a mantel!
Now we can hang up stockings for the kids on Xmas as a bonus!
TV in pic below shows DVD with burning log and either crackiling songs or Christmas songs! LOL
See Xmas stocking on each end for kids using 3M hooks for no damage. :)
So just buy a flat screen and surround sound system and problem solved!
