I assume its similar to the 290/1 with the stato carb and plastic design.

When I looked my dealer up the 250 is more than the 251 by $20?? The 291 is more than the 290 though?

I have a 251. It was a little less than the 250. It's a plastic shell but has been a good saw. In hindsight I probably would have bought a 362 but I didn't do a lot of research and needed a saw. I've used it a lot more than I thought it would and it hasn't disappointed other than noodling - just didn't have the power to pull the 18" bar. That's the only saw I've really used and at some point I'll seriously upgrade, but for now it works well. The guy I cut with is big on keeping a sharp chain which I would guess has helped. He showed me how to do it on a stump vice and I think I'm pretty decent at it. I sharpen it every tank or so which probably helps with my view of the saw.

I will clarify why I ask and my need.

I am a big saw guy I love the 70+cc saws.

This saw is one work will buy for me. I am the one deciding what to buy. This is not for firewood this will strictly be a truck saw for cutting downed trees out of the road every now n then. Usually will be smaller 14" or less hardwood or pine but those could be up to 24"s so speed is not that big a deal. I am only cutting g like 8feet out of the log so that I can drive my roads. I may use the saw a dozen times a year if that?

If they are buying? Then a 461 would fit that bill :dex:

Just kidding. . :) I know there is probably a budget. What is that budget? Around the $300 mark?

Haha. Boss said what do you want/need, you know best. I said I want a 461...honest I said that very thing.

There is no budget really, but $1000 for 3 saws would go over like a lead balloon...even if I just got it and the others got smaller saws!! I thought about 362 honestly...but not sure what they went to spend.

We need 3. One for me and 2 for another office.

He said was I sure I did not want the 291. I said that saw was heavy for its power...I think I may of mentioned "boat anchor" but I dont know if the extra cost of the "boss" is worth it for what I am doing with it.

Right now I am issues g my own saw...a 3814 earthquake.

Get them 170's and then take that $600 and get a 261C-M :dex:

Again, just joking.. My CAD comes out in rare form occasionally.

The 251 wouldn't be a bad saw. The 250/025 is a legendary homeowners saw and should be more than enough for the task you describe.

Thats what I said to him. I said 75% of the time a 170 would work but on occasion we cut 24" pine and dont want to use a 170 eventhough it could do it.

Sounds like a job for the MS241C-M. That would be about $1500 for 3 saws. 3 really good saws. But honestly, you might want to re-think the 291. They are much lighter than the 290 was and run much better IMO. Saddle them up with 16-18" bars and let 'er rip.

If the criteria is cheap, why do they need to be Stihl? Husky has some great saws in the 35-45cc range. (445?)

Cause I am a stihl guy and the boss requesting them likes stihl too.

Maybe its cause I like big saws but I am under impressed with the 445 that I have. Runs well but I guess it does all a 45cc is suppose to do??

The 250 will probably perform with the 445. I just want stihl and boss is ok with that he got stihl in his last position for them so he knows the cost.

I mean they won't buy me the 461 most likely but cost is not really that big a deal or super important. Quality is more important.

The place I work has deep pockets ;) that said I they to be as frugal as possible with purchases.

Grab the 291. Yeah those big saws are nice, but the rare occasion that you need one, I think you would be fine with a smaller saw. I know it isn't coming out of your pocket, but is coming out of someone's, and based on your usage I wouldn't go overboard. Just my .02

What's wrong with the MS291 then? Just $450 a saw and plenty of saw for what you describe and the usage. You would like it a LOT more than a 251.

So's the MS241.... Nicer in the small (Under 10") stuff IMO and noticeably lighter than the 261. But the 261 is awful hard to beat for an all around saw. Just keep smaller bars on it.

I was joking about the 461 and 261 comments above. If there is a budget? Then that will most likely be adhered to.

If he offered a 291? I would take it. Especially if it was the boss.

Nothing wrong with a 291!! And for free!

Yeah, Mtronic is nice. But a free 50 cc saw?

I said we really only need a 16" bar. Cause even if I get a 22" tree I can still come from the other side.

I would write down the 241, 261, and 291 and the good/bad about each. Compare with the cost and make your decision.
